Headlight problem
« on: 20 August 2008, 18:03:34 »

I hope this is the correct section to post this in. Yesterday at 4.25 am, for no apparent reason I lost BOTH dipped headlights. I have lights on full beam but nowt on dipped. Could this be a fuse? Have I shorted both bulbs? I'm not very technical.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Each side fed by seperate fuses, so unlikely you've blown both together, unless you've wiped out fuse link FV6 (one of the fuses by battery), but thats 80A, so that would take some doing...

Headlight switch I guess could be an issue

Thanks for that Boy, I reckoned both sides was not bulbs or fuses, though I could have been driving with one bulb gone without noticing (I drive in daylight mostly) then the other one went at 4.25 leaving me beamless. What is the recommended diagnostic approach please?

Check the bulbs and fuses (22 and 31), as easiest. Failing that, check for 12v at headlight...

I'm still in the dark......

Thanks for the guidance Boy, I am virtually non-technical so I took the car into Pentagon Mansfield last week and flashed my Trade Card. The young fellah was very helpful, finding the correct bulbs and coming outside to see if they worked before I coughed up the dosh.
They didn't work. He even checked the fuses and they were all intact.
I have since checked the whole fuse box except for the bigguns and they all appear to be OK.
Your advice to check for 12v at headlight is beyond me, owning no tester nor no clue as to where to test.
Can you suggest what next?
Thanks in advance

If fuses and bulbs ok, likely to be light switch.  You should be able to get one off here from someone who is breaking an Omega, or off ebay.  Pop the old one out and plug in the new.

As you are non-technical thats probably quicker/cheaper for you than buying a multimeter and trying to check feed at bulbs.

Hi dbug, thanks for the prompt reply.
As per Boy's suggestion in an earlier post, the young man @ Pentagon checked the switch. The result was that the full beam works, as do the fogs and the sidelights, which are all in the same switch cluster.
Is it likely that just the dipped beam would have gone? If so, I'll whack in a new switch if I can source one from a breaker.
Sorry if I'm a bit dense, I'm not doubting your advice, just covering all the relevant points.
Thanks again

Possible - switch is easy to change - held in by 2 spring clips at 3 & 9 o'clock.  Thin knife blades in both sides to hold clips in and it just pulls out the plug at back.  To refit just push firmly in until it locks.

OK for non-techies :y

Gotcha. I think even I can handle that. Anyone viewing this thread who has a switch to sell please pm me or contact through here. I'll also post in the appropriate 'wanted' section.
Thanks Boy & dbug, I'm indebted.

Oops, I can't post in 'wanted', I don't have the form (250 minimum posts seems a lot when you're buying). Anyway, if anyone's got I switch please contact me, my Paypal a/c is fully verified.
