Upgrading ICE
« on: 19 September 2008, 10:45:48 »

Yesterday I noticed that one of the speakers was sounding fuzzy and DaveDND kindly explained why - it's on the way out. As I will need to replace it I thought I would take the opportunity to upgrade all the speakers and purchase myself a new head unit too.

I'm not after anything fancy, just something to play my vast collection of mp3s and have narrowed my choice down to a SonyCDX-GT410.

Now according to Halfords I shouldn't need anything extra to fit this, but I am sceptical about that. So wondered whether anyone has had difficulty fitting aftermarket head units?

Anyone fitted a sony unit and have any tips?

TIA  :)

For once i will agree with Mr TB on this one...

Sony headunits (current modern range) are shite!

I used to have one in my old Mondeo, it seams all new ones make this bloody annoying beeping every time they loose power to 'remind' you to take the front section off.

Its bloody annoying and could not be turned off on mine, or others i believe.

I fitted a Alpine 9854R in mine, with a Vibe CBR10 Active Sub in the boot, it lifts the bass nicely. (too much for some old farts  ::))

Mine does the beeping, and is around 10 years old, it also works well still.

If you do go the Sony route the Connects2 adaptors are good

You may find that radio reception is a real issue with a Modern Sony in an Omega !!  The tuners are very weak - couple that with the really dodgy internal aerial on the Omega and you may be hard pushed to receive anything other than Classic FM

Strongly advise to think again.

Oh  :-/

That's not good then, it looked to be a reasonable unit for the price. We'll scratch that one off then.

Tunnie's given Alpine a nod, so I'll have a look at their range. Basically I'm after a sub-£100 head unit that plays MP3s, nothing fancy, decent radio reception would be nice as well.  :)
