Car won't start. Immobiliser problem ?
« on: 20 October 2008, 16:29:10 »

Hi,

The last couple of times I've got into my car, the interior alarm light has been flashing rapidly and it's only stopped after I put the key in the ignition.

I've just got into my car today and it won't start and the engine light is on and it won't turn over. The battery has plenty of power so it sounds like it could be an immobiliser problem.

Is there an easy fix, or is it a dealer job or can anyone recommend someone. I'm on Holy Island in Northumberland.

I'm NOT a techie, so any solutions, please explain in idiot language.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Regards

I'm sure that immobiliser problems give a flashing EML.
You need to do a paper clip test to ask it what the fault is.

Thanks Andy B

I've just been reading about the paper clip test, so I'll try it later and see what I get.

On a non IR car (ie, later than 1995), the EML will flash if its immobiliser problem.

I suspect you have a different problem, all will be revealed when you post up results of paperclip test :)

AND THE WINNER IS..........................

No one.

I got 3 codes:
13
89
31

which I read as

O2 Sensor 1 Open Circuit
O2 Sensor 2 Open Circuit
No Engine RPM Signal

Any suggestions as to what I do now would be gratefully received as I haven't got a clue what any of that means.

Thanks

Phil

P.S. This car used to belong to a member here, as it has a sticker in the back window advertising the club and the road tax holder is branded as well. The reg is T605 HFV if anyone's interested.

OK.

The o2 sensors won't stop the car starting.

The 31 is non conclusive, as it happens if engine not running, but can signify failed crank sensor (which will stop a V6 starting)

But could also be an old fashioned fuel/fuel pump/fuel pump relay problem.

Thanks. What do you suggest I do now ?

Should I just call out a mechanic ?

Is there an auto fuel cut off switch anywhere on these ? I remember I had a problem on a car years ago and I just needed to reset the switch. As I said, I'm not engine orientated, so it's all rocket science to me.

Cheers

I'd check for fuel at injector rail, and if fuel there (and at a little pressure), change crank sensor
