rear wing aerial or roof
« on: 27 October 2008, 19:13:35 »

hi. it may be too late to read the outcome but ive had this dilema for about 4weeks now. the radio in this Omega is rubbish. i believe its built into the rear window ... the vertical sections of the window heater.  ive been asking around for a stick on window aerial that will work on the STD FM vhf band. so far no-one can help. other than buying a telephone aerial and adapting it ... the only option is a electric aerial on the rear wing panel.
if theres any options ... anyone ?? else tomorrow i will have to be brave and drill a hole in the paintwork  :'( ... why the hell vauxhall didnt fit a roof aerial i dont know.  i also dont fancy ripping the headlings as its as new.
 ... the countdown starts .. :-/

If you really dont want to go down thr correct route of drilling a hole, then stick on FM aerials are available from me

Before getting drastic I would make sure the connector hasn't worked loose in the back of the radio, that the preamplifier is getting power and working OK and that the connections to the heated rear window are sound.

It isn't the best antenna in the world but in my experience it's adequate.

I gave up with my original aerial and fitted a roof aerial at the front. Just remove the sunroof control panel, whack a hole in the roof, threadle the cable across the headlining, remove the a pillar trim and fiddle the cable down there, pop the glove box out and lay the cable in above it, remove the radio and cage and fix the aerial into the cage and replace everything! Sorted, loads of stations all of the time :y

I used a long aerial like Peugeot or Renault use. I used to fit them to the Monza's as the standard aerials were rubbish on them as well!

I had this problem on my CDX a couple of years ago & it turned out to be a faulty in-line connector in the original ariel lead somewhere in the n/s footwell. I just replaced the whole lead between the radio & the amplifier under the rear parcel shelf, all available from any ICE outlet & under a tenner!  :y :y

hi. ive had a overwelming responce & thanks to all. the previous comment about a roof aerial apealed to me the most .. but theres no sunroof in my GLS model and the thought of mucking up the nice headling scared me more than a hole outside.
i did check the radio a couple of times as ive just put in a small amp and rear sub. the radio is a little suspect even now. its not the most sensitive radio ive ever owned.
well today started nice and bright. i made a early start. bit the bullet and went for the hole on the rear wing (drivers side) as the spare wheel is the other side. the aerial fitted as if it was meant to be there .. and well clear of the roof & rear window .. so its now out in the open. i gritted my teeth as i cut the 1st pilot hole ... but once i got the rubber cup down on the bodywork it doesnt really spoil it too much.
the chrome could have a touch of matt black on it & i recon it would finish the look off. ..... being a dark color car.
..... and the verdict.    great! :y thats more like it.  now when i scan it doesnt just go round n round.
