Help Philips Sat Nav Carin - Install & Wireing
« on: 06 December 2008, 02:41:45 »

Just bought an Early Philps Carin Sat Nav System second Hand, to Install in my Elite 2.5 1998 model. Have Display, Nav Control Unit (CD player), Mult-Func-Switch, Speaker, Antenna and most of the loom.

The loom has been cut at the extra wires that come out of the 6 pin plug which is down at the passenger footwell. Also missing are the wires that I beleive run through the bulk head to the battery/relay?, two have been cut near the 6-pin plug. I do have information sent to me by a very helpfull guy which i have yet to fully check.

Any further wireing diagrams would be helpfull and pictures of the fitting-re wireing process would be of great help. I will also take my own pictures and post here as I begin to fit. One other important question that i need answering concerns the multi function display, is my current one ok with the sat nav that i have or do i need the original. This is probably an important point before i start.

thankyou for any help, regards Dave

If this is any help, a company called NAV-TECH in Holland sells the CD's for the Nav control unit.

The number is 00325-553-84245, but they only do the CD's.

Uk and Ireland £77.0 inc vat&postage (only for Christmas though - ha ha)

Euro Pack £ 134.00 inc vat&postage

Also just got the 2.3 and 2.9 you know what, can send it to anyone who needs it. Please note I havent tried it yet and its in .rar format.

Read this from Jules Feb 2008 Post, connection seems to be lost, how can i find it.

"If you find this connector is not there, you have two choices, either locate the wires within the large multiplugs and tap in there. Detailed here:

There is no connection back to battery, or any relays involved.  All power derived from 6pin plug, with exception of 0V, where there is a suitable 0V stud (m8 iirc) just above passenger kick panel.

The Carin is entirely independent from rest of car, so radios/mids/spec are irrelevent.

If you have a pre MY98.5 v6 (guessing you do, hence no Carin plug ;)), you will have to move the Traction Control switch from left of radio up to switchbank above radio.

That Wanadoo site is likely lost forever, hence why I said I would dig out the details when I take my Carin out (upgraded to the newer Siemens/VDO system in both my Omegas)

The Boy, thanks for the reply

My car has got one plug and the traction control is the later switch, next to the Eco and Driver SEat Warmer switch.

The Carin plugs directly into my Car loom, my car loom has an additional RED at pin 6.

The Carin Plug has identical wire colouring to my Car except for the red at pin 6. But, the Carin plug has 2 lots of wires, does anyone know where the second lot go.

Also on the Carin loom there is an additional red and brown, I beleive they are the Red for F12 20A fuse and the Brown must be Earth. Can someone confirm any of this.

thankyou Dave

Good News, I connected the RED to 12V Fused and the Brown to Earth and the system Fired Up. The other wires from the Carin Loom appear not to be important to the function of the system, maybe they are feeds.

Here are some images of the Boot bracket, 3 screws, 2 at the back and one above on cross member, not screwed in yet.

I added the red to multiplug (most places sell the pins).  The other wires in diag, just put some heatshrink over - they are for hardwiring in if you don't have plug.

Behind the MID, but personally, I mounted mine (for Carin) just above the Carin main cd unit - mine was magnetic, so I just popped up through one of the holes in the metal parcelshelf, so it sat just under the carpet of the shelf.

Navteq for the map disks, around £70, the firmware disk is rare.  I have one, but due to copyright, cannot distribute  :'(

I contacted Vauxhall who said they could get me a disk for £220, yeah right.

To establish who and what cd's were compatible with my Philips Carin I tried to contact Philips first. Philips then gave me the number for the company they sold the rights to:-

1. Philips

2. Continental Automotive Trading Company

on 0121-326 1234

It appears these are the guys who also wrote the software for the cd's to work, the Firmware.

3. Next VDO Dayton, they are also Continental Automotive Trading Company, according to the guy I spoke to at Continental, VDO Dayton was sold last month, guess who?. Concerning my compatible CD, the guy at continental said for my 97 Philps Carin I need the VDO Dayton MS5000 or VDO DAYTON Carin Series.

4. Nav-Tec are the new owners of the Original Carin Series sat nav rights. But when I contacted Nav-Tec who I belived are based in the Netherlands, they said the software has changed and they couldnt guarantee their disk would work on systems before 2000. Another call to Continental conflicts with this info, they said if you go on the Navtec site and put in Installed by Manufacturer, Choose Opel/Vauxhall, then year - 1997 and up comes the right disk, special offer £68 + the nasty's.

Interesting

The firmware disk hasn't been available for some time - the Carin system hasn't been supported for ages.

The map disks are available from navteq - i'm running a 2007 one on my carins.
