2.5TD Alternator
« on: 04 March 2009, 14:31:56 »

my TD will not charge above 13.85v, there is a new (ish) battery all the battery connections and earths have been removed and cleaned.
I read somewhere on this site that is is possible to change the          v. regulator by tipping the alternator over in situ, as taking it out is a major job.

Two questions:
 1. will a replacement v. regulator solve the lack of volts?

 2. is this in situ fix achievable by a bloke with moderate spanner    skills?

Thank you in advance for your comments and advice

The alternator isn't that difficult to remove if you don't have aircon...

I do have air-con the car is an Elite model so anything in the parts bin was bolted on, and slowly but surely they start to have intermittent failures. So I guess air-con makes a difference to the Haynes book spanner rating?

yup, not room to slide forward.  So no easy way of getting out.

A--e!  Is this v. regulator removal dodge of undoing the alternator and rolling it over going to be loads of aggro too, and is a new v. regulator going to solve my low charge voltage. I have used the excellent idiots guide to charging that Kevin Wood wrote and 13.8v is all I get.

cheers

I reckon its going to be tight to do it (almost) in situ.  As to charging voltage, check its not the battery dragging it down.
