Doors don't open !!
« on: 28 June 2009, 16:33:40 »

First of all: Hello, I'm an absolutely newby and I'm looking for urgent help.  Also, as you'll see, my english is not so good cause I'm from South America.

The car: Opel Omega CD 2.5 1997.
The problem: Last night left the car on the "lock on" (anti theft system) and this morning..  can't open the doors ! They are locked, the remote control does not work (I think baterry is ok) and (the worst) by using the key does not work at all.

Also, the car battery seems to be discharged.

Please.. any help?

Hello Pato and a very warm welcome to you! :y

You should be able to open the car by manually unlocking.  Put the key in the drivers door lock and turn to clockwise.  It may be very stiff, and the button may not come up, but the door will unlock.  You can then open your bonnet and deal with the battery issue. 8-)

With mine I unknowingly left the boot lid open and the boot light drained my battery over a weekend! ::) ::)

Hope all goes well! ;) ;)

Hi, Lizzie.  I tried your advice but door is still locked.  The key turns easily about 1/4 the circle clockwise, not more.  Should I try harder? I don't want to brake the only key I own!
Maybe I should wait till the rain is over. What a mess!

It can be very difficult to turn the key .. but it WILL go ... even though the buttons don't pop up.

Another way is to go under the car from the front and attach another 12 volt  source to the alternator output to the battery, if the button battery is good this may give enough "oomph" to open the doors....  you can then pop the bonnet and charge up the battery.

As its a 1997 .. I'm guessing its a pre/mini face lift ???  in which case you could also try opening the boot, giving the centre back seat arm rest thingy a VERY firm kick to pop off the catch, it is then possible to drop one of the back seats and undo a rear door ....

I've also heard of folks attaching a  12v source to the boot light, leaving it a few hours and then being able to open the doors electrickly .. but never tried that !!!

Yes, but do not do what I did and break the key when the lock had already opened!! :'( :'(

Keep trying the handle all the way through as you turn the key to check on progress.  I repeat the button may very well not come up, but the lock could well be open! :D :D ;)

Failing that try Entwood's approach.

Still trying (and still raining), but by using the manual key -turning left-right about 1/4 circle clockwise (would it turn more?)- and the handle don't work neither.
I'll take a brake untill the rain stop, and then I'll try the Endwood's 2nd. approach. (Keeping the firm kick as a last chance).
Thanks all, friends (and sorry about my poor english).
I'll keep you informed.

Have you tried the passenger door with the key? Don`t force it though, as its not impossible that the locks may have been changed at some point, which may explain why your key does not work?

It should work with the key, note though the door pin will not go up when it unlocks, well it didn't on mine anyway.

If you have a towbar with a caravan charge socket then you can feed in 12V and open the doors.

My locks were so stiff I gave up on them and did this, later found that soaking the key in WD40 and firm pressure back and forth for 15mins opened the doors. Took another 15mins to open the boot, probably never been opened on the key since new!

Providing it's not been wired through a smartcom relay ......  :)

Admittedly ... IF wired correctly there SHOULD be a permanently live feed direct from the battery protected by a 10 amp fuse, as well as the ignition switched one .... but in my experience many installs are wired incorrectly to save time.. and most folks never know until its too late .. :(

Worst case scenario, which is cheapest to replace?

Rear 1/4 light or passenger side window?

 :-/

Rear 1/4 is the smallest, but may not be easiest to replace, and the passenger side is most common to be smashed on thefts (thus potentially cheapest?) to replace. Never break the drivers side window, as you don`t want to sit on glass whilst driving somewhere to get it fixed, and if passengers moan about the glass, make them bloody walk.

I'd be jacking the car up to crawl under it to connect 12v to the alternator before I started breaking windows !!!!
