Phillips SC804 no audio
« on: 09 July 2009, 16:17:10 »

I am still struggling with my Philips SC 804 audio system. It started with no sound from it when starting the car and the sound would come on after a while with crackling etc. but would then settle and be ok.
The time interval before it would come on got longer until it did not come on at all. The station identification is visible so it seems a pure audio problem. ( power is on)

I purchased a replacement head on Ebay but that was exactly the same. I have disconnected all the speakers and cannot find any wires shorting out and I have  dug about in the boot for an amplifier and cannot find anything. With speakers disconnected there appears  to be 0.03 volts across the speakers.
Can anyone out there help as I have resorted to singing in the car and that is not a good thing.

Try connecting a single test speaker on a length of wire across any of the speaker terminals on the back of the radio, with the rest of the car speakers disconnected - do you get any sound?

If you have the amplified system (subs in shelf?) then you will need to locate the amp anbd check it is powering up.

More common though is for a speaker to have gone short circuit in a non amp`d system, and the easiest way to check for this is to reconnect the speaker wires one at a time. Eventually you will connect one that shuts down the audio, and when you do, thats the speaker I would check for first.

All the speakers are dis connected. If by subs on shelf do you mean a couple of big speakers on the parcel shelf? If so I have them. According to Haynes drawing sound processor U23 and is protected by fuse F6 which I have so I am guesssing there is an amp somewhere. My problem is where it is located.

OK Found it. It is located in the spare wheel well just in front of the wheel.

It is a Phillips Type SP 1601 with W8Y on the label. The voltages check out ok and the fuse is intact but no sound so I guess it is goosed.

The next question is will I be able to get something to easily replace it without a lot of re-wiring. The connecting block is similar to the layout on the radio head. Three rows of connectors one row longer by one pair of connections.

Make sure you have the all important switch on voltage, and if all else fails, I`m sure that someone out there may just have one of those amps and will be along shortly

I have ordered a new amp. Can ayone help me translate the connection diagram from the Philips amp. Just an indictation of what the shorthand stands for so I get the ins and outs right way round.

Not sure if this image will be readable. Apologies if it is not.

The plugs are all keyed so cannot be put in the wrong places.

If you are reconnecting bare cables, then your faults may lie elsewhere.

The new amp will not have the same plug as this so I will have to cut off and connect the wires.

The middle row connections are marked like rrs and rrg. Will this be right rear speaker and right rear ground and will be out put to speakers?

Top row has
rrs and inf: frs and nc: fls and bb-: rls and bb+: ag and +12v rem. Are these the inputs from the head?

Bottom row wrs and wrg: wls and wlg: which I assume are outputs to the woofers in the parcel shelf. There is also two 12 volt inputs.

Sorry, but if you are attempting to lash up a different amplifier rather than the plug and play of the correct amplifier, then I`m afraid that I am unable to assist any further.

Make sure that your new proposed amplifier is fully suitable for the system that you are intending to run it with, as it is not uncommon for the Omega to utilise a dedicated amplifier for its non-standard speaker configuration.

best of luck   :y
