What sort of budget to upgrade facelift Bose?
« on: 06 August 2009, 20:42:16 »

Im just thinking (as you do) about upgrading the CCR 2006/Bose in my Elite but what sort of budget would be needed to make a ~noticable~ difference?

To be honest, i cant knock the factory system, very nice separation and clarity, good tight bass and plenty of volume, and of course its all integrated nicely.

I know its a complete speaker/head unit change, plus wiring too id imagine, the good news i would think is you could mount an amp where the bose one is, i wouldnt want a boot full of sub either, something nice and stealthy!

Am mainly thinking of the swap as i had a Blaupunkt MP68 in my old Mondeo which had bluetooth phone and mp3/usb connections, would be nice to have those features :)

Any suggestions?

Cheers!

I`m probably not the best person to answer this as all I would say is that ripping the BOSE system out costs nothing at all, and In my opnion, even silence is better than that anchient and overated system.

Seriously though, put a good bit of your budget into some good branded component speakers, especially the front -

If you are trying to do this on the cheap and fit £50 unbranded speakers, or anything found on ebay, then leave the BOSE in there.

Are we talking £500 inc installation for speakers, headunit etc or more though?

Cos thats the thing, it would have to be a LOT better to justify £500, especially in a car environment which isnt known for good accoustics  :D :P

Nothing wrong with car acoustics if quality equipment is professionally installed to compensate for its weaknesses.

As a good starting point I`d be looking to spend around £15O for fronts speakers, £100 for rear, £150 for an amp (+£50 for cables) £150+ for head unit (+£50 for steering convertor) and then get it installed professionally - when getting a quote for that, make sure they are aware that a BOSE system is coming out.

Of course, those prices are only a rough guide to quality car audio, yes, there are much cheaper out there, and there is a reason they are cheaper. If you cannot afford those sorts of prices, then do it in stages, but don`t cut corners by going for nasty equipment. Take a few discs with you to your local audio shop and have a listen to a few demo systems.

I think the trouble is you cant really do Bose removal in stages can you? Suppose i could buy a few bits a month, although do install companies like you to have your own parts? I would think they would shy away from that as im sure they wouldnt want to guarentee someone elses purchase, even if new.

Are we looking at a days work for a pro job Dave? Roughly what sort of numbers for an install cost? I appreciate you do it as a living so if thats sensitive info thats fine.

Would it be worth mounting replacement subs where the Bose ones are or can door speakers offer the same amount of bass these days?

Sorry for all the questions, have to be able to justify it to my better half!  ;D ::) :-[

You are correct that teh BOSE has to come out in one go, although you could stage the installation to allow for budget. Fit good speakers and head unit, and upgrade to amp and sub as funds will allow.

Yes, we use our own preferred supply of parts etc, but we also sell these through our website, and always happy to assist fellow Oofers with installation tips if buying products from us.

Yes, mounting subs in the original location is fine, but just watch the spec and volumetric box sizes to ensure the correct performance.

I suppose a days work is fairly accurate to do it properly, and costs would really depend on the place you took it.

However, people never budget for installation and the odd bits and pieces/cables etc that all mount up when planning a large system, so we always advise to think in terms of an extra 50% (roughly) of what ever you are buying to allow for labour and "odds n sods"
