battery light has come on while driving?
« on: 05 September 2009, 21:20:23 »

Yesterday my battery light came on while driving. It keeps fading on and off, nothing else seems wrong :-? The battery is only 3 months old and I put it on when having hot start problems. Still a pain to start when hot but was going to keep going until something else went wrong. Got stuck in the garage again tonight, they must think I fancy the guy behind the desk ;) as I spend so much time there ;D ;D ;D ;D
Noticed the battery light stays very dim when I first turn keys on and get brighter when driving. Any ideas where I should start checking tomorrow :-/

Looks like you might have a problem with your alternator  :-/

Also check out on fleabay "bmw diesel hot start fix" approx £29.95 + £2.95 p&p, bought one for my tractor, BRILL. It fools engine so glow plugs come on, I then wait 5 secs after glow plugs, turn key and hey-presto. Little black box with 4 wires, if I can do it, anyone can.  :y

I agree with ZIAD here. Put a multimeter across the terminals whist running. You should see something from around 13.9 to 14.4v. Reckon you should also get the battery rechecked. New doesn't always mean new when it comes to batteries.

Do you have aircon? If so, the pipes may get in the way, making it a bugger.

TIS suggests, with inlet off, you can lift it out.  Poppycock!!

Yes I have aircon, I was wondering if this was out of my league  :-? too many other things wrong with Syd to warrant paying lots of money to fix, so maybe time to scrap both cars and get one that is trouble free. Ive kept them both running through the summer but as fast as I fix one thing something else goes wrong :( :( :( :( :(  if the pipes get in the way is it an access problem or is it that it just will not come out?

Its actually an easy job to do, but really fiddly to find an easy way out. Seem to remember doing someone's TD (Omegatoy?) that was really easy - mine was a pig.
