Have a look at your number plate bulb.My warning was on for a week before i went away and the headlights and tail lights were working fine.It wasn't till someone pointed out the plate bulb was out.

headlight or brake light?
Are you confusing the brake light check when you first start up with a failed lamp? You will get a message of something like brake light when you first turn the ignition on, if all is OK then the message goes away. If it remains or comes on after pressing the brake pedal when driving, then you have a brake light out (or the system tinks you have ;)).
If HID headlamps, then an error message on these can be due to level sensors failing or becoming detached from the little arm attaching it to the wishbone/rear radius arm. Or it can be a siezed level motor inside the headlamp.
Cheap lamps can also upset & confuse the check modules.

i had this on my old pre face lift. Halfords bulbs with soft solder(?) contacts on the end. With vibration and time the contact on the bulb goes flat loosing tension on the spring in the cluster. Left long enough the end gets bad enough for it to break contact, over a bump i guess, the circuit is broken for a second and the error is thrown on the dash.

The system can only see a brake in the circuit. It cant tell if the bulb is blown, only that the circuit is not complete.

I also had bulbs that where tight in the fitting meaning they would not seat correctly. The fittings in the cluster aint great either tbh.
