Settle an argument guys
« on: 16 February 2008, 19:44:21 »

Damaged repairable cars.....I say that

Cat C loses more of a percentage of the book price than Cat D and
Cat D requires no checks to put back on hte road and loses about 25% of book price..

Dad reckons D still requires a check and they both lose about 40% of book  ::)

Anyone know for sure or have experience of damage repairables?

They are basically concerned with the vehicle's identity being used to clone a "nicked one". Hence Cat C means that part of the body has to   be swapped/welded and so it is checked to make sure it is still the original vehicle. Cat D means nothing major, but they can't be arsed to repair. For example if a car had its paintwork damaged, a respray could cost £2000, which can be 50% of the vehicle's value, so it will be written off, Cat D. I don't know the drop in value, as I've never had to sell one. Do you have to tell the new owner its a write off ?. I don't think this is a legal requirement, hence the sense in an HPI check before parting with the readies.

cat c will appear permanently on reg. document as a car that has been an insurance loss and will thereforeloss a lot of its value.cat d does not show on docs. and may not lose any value (depending wether seller discloses and buyer does hpi,as previously mentioned)so basically your right and dads wrong :y

In the UK the insurance loss categories used by insurance companies include:

Category A - Severely damaged so much so that the whole vehicle cannot be resold but must be taken off the road and crushed. There are no serviceable parts. The DVLA will require a Notification of Destruction for the vehicle.

Category B - The Vehicle as a whole may not be resold or returned to road but parts may be sold. The vehicle is damaged beyond repair usually due to major structural damage. The DVLA will require a Notification of Destruction but parts are allowed to be removed and sold first.

Category C - Repairable salvage. Significant damage to the vehicle so much so the cost of the repair exceeds book value. It can be sold for repair but must have a VIC inspection before returning to the road.

Category D - Repairable salvage. Vehicle has minimal, probably non-structural damage. May have been economic to repair, but insurer does not want to. Often this is due to the vehicle being stolen and recovered after the claim has been paid to the insured. Or the parts to repair the vehicle are difficult to find. Does not need VIC inspection to return back to the roadway but notification will remain on the vehicle history check.

Category X - Repairable vehicle with minor damage. It has been part of an insurance claim but was lightly damaged and required minimal repairs. This is not recorded with the DVLA so would not appear on a Vehicle Data Check.

something that i have thought about and talked to a few people about.

Cat C is devalued by about 25% as far as the trade is concerned, but you talk to a lot of traders they will tell that if the job is done properly then it shouldn't devalue a car.

personally i wouldn't bat an eyelid about buying a gat C so long as it had been done correctly and it was considered OK by an independent survey

Me neither, as long as I wasn't planning on selling it.
