Heated seat wont stop heating!
« on: 14 December 2009, 22:44:06 »

My drivers leather seat gets very hot even on heat setting 1 untill it burns me & smells like the car is about to catch fire. Where is the thermostat? ::)
The pass 1 is fine.

The facelift has variable heat settings....  ;)

Would investigate switch and wiring before using again, TBH...

There is a thermostat sewn into the seat fabric at the lower reas of the seat base on Elite & Leather models, but lesser models with cloth seats have a solid state thermostat.

An absolute pig to change and you are best off regulating with the switch IMHO.

This is a sign of impending failure as the hotspot then burns through & the heater element goes open circuit & stops working  :'(

If leather then the element is sewn into the seat cover & the whole lot needs to be swapped, the heather pads for (non-Elite) cloth are separate and could be added to an Elite seat as a repair - if that makes sense.

Repairs to the leather ones are possible, but very very fiddly and just tend to move the hotspot to somewhere else that's the one next most likely to fail  :'(

My back gets hotter than my bum. I think a burnt back is better than a burnt arse.  :y

I don't think I'm going to try and investigate this one since as soon as I get to the bottom of it, my a/c will have stopped working again in 45 deg C.  ;D

Rusty if you find out where that relay is please let me know.

There is a relay inside the seat base of leather and Elite cloth seats, but its enclosed inside a small box and not audible in normal circumstances. It also only works if the heated seat is operational as the coil is wired in series with the element for the back.

Normal cloth seats are not controlled by a relay, with the  dash switches taking the full seat current (of about 5 amps) on pre/mini facelift models.

Nothing is stopping you from removing it & having a look see. It doesn't cost owt, other than your time, and the fix might very well be obvious.  :y :y
