The new clit's have them too i think, it must be cheaper for manufactures to not bother developing their own any more, and just get tomtom to stick their latest one in.

I do think Tomtom have lost their way - pretty much buggered up the WinCE ver going from V3 to V5, never released V7 except to some phone OEMs, then released that crap gayphone version. No idea what they have been smoking back in Holland....

iPhone version is no different to the very old Pocket PC version i use, has a few more bells and whistles, but basic nav is the same.

I def think tt on a mobile media device of your choice is the way to go with mobile nav software. Be it gay phone or whatever "bill gates lick dick product" your into.

Just hope i can find a version that will work on the n900 if they ever release it on a network.

Poor compared to what would you say? Other portables, other mobiles or in car which it world be worse obviously. May or may not be worth a bluetooth gps device? They still drop out though, as they do.
I guess if its using a surf star 3 chip set then its as good as it gets....?

Poor compared to WM6 / Pocket PC devices, i use a very old iPaq paired to a bluetooth GPS i chuck on the dash. The GPS lasts for ever, its got a mobile phone battery, but its gone all the way from here, to Germany, weeks worth of driving, and then back again on a single charge!!!

Signal is always strong thanks to the GPS unit being at the base of the windscreen. I have a mount down low.....





Its a real bodge job, its just small metal bracket that slots in between the fake wood dash and the 'rubber' dash moulding. I like its position, i hate stuff mounted on the windscreen, they wobble and its too bright right in your eye.

Its mounted out of the way, and just takes a flick of the eyes down to check where i am. Trouble is, down there the iPhone gets poor GPS signal, and being Apple, its picky about what devices it pairs too. Not been able to pair it to either of my bluetooth adpators.

Aye? Features will be "basically" the same its a sat nav, thats just it though, basic. And when was data ever expensive?  Data is free with a half decent contract, large add on bundles  are a couple of quid.
 re maps the latest navtec discs have that very irritating reminder to tune to classic fm or cancel tmc(why on a uk map? It doesnt work in the uk) everytime you turn it on. Thats a bit thick you got to admit?

Anyway, stop winding me up. As said its the age of the unit that lets it down. And you havent answered my or the op's question, whats the best GM unit that can be fitted in an Omega?  cd 70/80/dvd90? Your supposed to be fitting one or other, cant remember which??? We're all waiting on you.

My company pay my phone bill. They get pissed if I let TT run amock over data. TT does seem to create an awful lot of traffic.

Can't think of much (worthwhile) that TT does that the siemens doesn't, only the siemens does it better.

Turn off TMC - as you say, it'll never work in UK.

iphone version is very different to PPC/WinCE/Symbian versions, and very, very buggy. Expect some crashes. Not sure they have fully resolved the issue with Tomtom continuing after a phone call, but thats partly a problem with the OS that crApple have put on

GayPhone GPS far superior to Tunnie's beloved HTC/Android one...   ...as much as it pains me to say, crApple have got that right.

gayPhone has probably the best integrated GPS of any phone.  Just as well, as gayPhones Bluetooth stack only supports handsfree.  If you need a better GPS, you need one of the oddities like TomToms one iPhone bracket

A few people have changed the NCDC from a part CAN Vectra C/ Signum to a full CAN CD70

One person has put the FULL CD70 set up with colour screen in a Mk3 Cavalier.

So yes it can be done in an Omega. Just needs an SOT lead and a bit of a re-wire.

TMC is the bigest waste of time, as said above the VXL system is poor, lot worse than even the cheapest Nacteq based stand alone units, its not very user friendly

I find the HTC tracks very well in the car, it takes longer to lock on than iPhone.

Some of the required signals - speed for one - simply aren't available in can form on omega.

Was hoping for Dvd 90 to make it worth while to be honest?

But am resigned to keeping current head unit. Its not bad when all's said and done. :-)

Mine is a May 1998 model Elite and the Carin system is fitted as standard. The screen is at the left of the ashtray and the guts are in the boot above the ns wheelarch.
I don't use it cos the control knob just above the handbrake lever is a freekin nuisance cos it activates at the slightest touch then the cow nags you and won't shut up until you gag her. I ended up Bluetacking the cap off a small WD40 over it to stop it getting touched by accident.
Mounted a TomTom 720 instaed and it is magic!

Defo used to be the case, but think they have taken their eye off the ball recently, and struggling to get back in to the market (hence the savage price cuts on the cheaper units)

The Carin works, but sluggish with up to date maps.  Its accuracy is stunning, even without a gps signal (unplug the aerial, and see how good it is).

The screen is too low, and the control button keeps getting knocked by passenger.


That said, I haven't removed the Carin for my MV6. Its always there if the primary satnav (Siemens NCDR1500 + CID) lets me down.


Wouldn't go back to my standalone TomToms, partly becuase I gave them away, but also its another device to carry around. Oh, and the scrotbags will smash your windows, as they will know its in your glovebox when they see the telltale circles on the screen.


One of my pet hates is the retards who mount their electronic gizmos right in the middle of the screen, reducing their visibility.  If my car fails an MOT because an airfreshener just dangles from mirror, I think their should be rules for those idiots too stupid to mount their gizmos properly.
