I would recomend a porche 944, I drove mine last summer for a bit of RWD fun. You can pick them up for around a 1k. avoid the 924 because they look rubbish compared to the 944 (all flared out) get your self a LUX if poss there even nicer.....
... Best handling car I have owned with plenty of poke. I have the 2.5lt. Parts (mechanicly) are cheap and basic VW. Body work is very expensive, thats why mine is off the road....  :-[

A VW Beetle by anyother name. ;D ;D ;D

nothing like them...  :o

the engine was from an LT, the gearbox was originally designed to be the Audi unit.

some of the switchgear was VW based as was things like the door handles and the rear axle design was typical VW.

The car was badly maligned by the press, once it received the 2.5 porsche engine it was a far better car, but by that time things had moved on and the 944 was deemed to be the better car.

924 and 944 had near 50/50 distribution, fantastic handling and were quite comfortable to drive long distance, i used to do plymouth-darlington-plymouth in a day in my little 924 turbo  :-?

i have seen a few turbos kicking around, 170 bhp, 1200kgs, RWD, turbo lag and for between 1k and 2k, i am tempted  ;)

The turbo was only 170 BHP, from a 2.5? Was it running a compression ratio of 6:1 and 0.5 bar boost? :D

the 924 turbo was a 2.0 with 170bhp
the 944 turbo was 2.4 with near on 217bhp

sorry i was referring to the 924, if i was looking at a 944 it would be close to 4k for a rough one

Needs a bit of work, but could give you a few pennies!

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/advert+search/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-12-29-50-58-62-68/advert.action?R=200807303760537&distance=302&postcode=G81+1AQ&channel=CARS&make=&model=&min_pr=500&max_pr=1000&max_mileage=

This needs even less work and is a lot faster. Better engine and gearbox too!

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/advert+search/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-12-29-50-58-62-68/advert.action?R=200802301477467&distance=372&postcode=G81+1AQ&channel=CARS&make=&model=&min_pr=500&max_pr=1000&max_mileage=

Dep on condition, this could be a tidy money maker to the retro jap drifter. Fun to drive too!

Here are a couple of safe bets.

There is a lot of choice as I am sure you are aware, but condition will be paramount with these cars, all very tough mechanically, and people know that.
Hope these help.

P.S, Haggle hard!   :y ;D

i consider myself to be a brave man......

there is a line between brave and stupid, that's a line i wont cross  ;)

bringing the bike home would be a stupid move and will result in a below wasteline surgical procedure without any form of pain killers  :o :o

A few years agon now I was out on the bike, and had been for a few hours. Came home and as I walked in the door the phone rang, the voice on the phone introduced himself as 'Durham Police' imagine what swmbo would have thought if it rang befor I got home and she answered.  :) :) :)
The phone call was cos little un had mad a 999 call and put the phone down, she was only 2 and playing with the phone. She never did it again.
