Might be tough within the budget but a tatty kit car would give you something to tinker with and, if you improve it, you will make money on it when you sell.

On Autotrader loads of BMW 3 series, a few Nissan Silvias, 2 Skylines, wrecked 200SX.

No Escorts on there though nor any fastish cheap 70s stuff.

I suggest just look and see what appears

May be a tad over budget but seems to tick most of the boxes. Not sure about RWD though?

Agree with the wrecked 200sx, but if you can push £2K then this is for sale:

nice car, and i like the colour as well, but my budget is 1K....

This is only something for the summer, a weekend car to blast around in and have some giggles, the Omega is staying as the main car
seen a nice Corrado in Yellow as well as a supercharged one, i know they are basically a golf in drag but they are a pretty car and do handle well, although not RWD and i would get my money back on it at  the end of summer when i put it up for sale again

came across this......

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1996-P-ALFA-ROMEO-GTV-T-SPARK-16V-BLACK_W0QQitemZ260210896294QQihZ016QQcategoryZ9834QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

i have factored the cost of cam belt and variator in, i have always liked these and they are supposed to handle really well for a FWD car

Easy if we ignore one little word in your want.
Manual, RWD fast and fun and if you buy right you may get you money back in 12 months. :D

I would recomend a porche 944, I drove mine last summer for a bit of RWD fun. You can pick them up for around a 1k. avoid the 924 because they look rubbish compared to the 944 (all flared out) get your self a LUX if poss there even nicer.....
... Best handling car I have owned with plenty of poke. I have the 2.5lt. Parts (mechanicly) are cheap and basic VW. Body work is very expensive, thats why mine is off the road....  :-[
