HID/Xenon
« on: 28 April 2010, 20:26:43 »

I find it very difficult to understand what type of bulb i need to replace a blown one, I have searched e-bay but not knowing what the spec for the bulbs are is not helping.
I have a 1998 2,5td cdx with xenon lights.
Any advice would be welcomed, ie: type name etc.
Thanks

According to the autobulbs web site you need. D2S hid bulbs . The standard fit would be around 6000k I think . The lower the k number the whiter the light given off hope this helps

D2S - yip.

You're sort of right about the Kelvin values - very low (up to 3000K) means a yellowy light like halogens, then 4500 - 6000K is a crisp white (the best light) then 8000-10,000K it goes a bit blue, 12,000K+ sees it purple.
Under 4500K and over 6000K and the brightness starts to fade.

4300k gives the yellowest light, and best illumination
5000k gives the most natural night
6000k gives a white light
8000k and upwards are going from bluey to purple and very showy, but not very good for seeing where you are going.

I bought 6000k cos its all i could find at a good price.  If I was buying today I'd be looking for 5000k's  :y

I would replace the pair, as even if you buy the same colour, they have aged so will look different, and likely the other is about to go too, they have had identical use afterall....

I would also spend a little more to get phillips or osram, rather than the chinese bulbs.  Mine have been ok, heard of lots that havent, and I found some reviews somewhere that showed quite a difference in performance too.
