Engine light :(
« on: 04 June 2010, 23:01:37 »

Well just got the car all sorted, for the MOT today, but on the way home the Engine light came on :) GREAT!!!!
Little history about the car, i got it a week ago, as the car had been sitting for 6 months and not moved,
I got it for a good price with the view to sell it on, but kinda like it now lol, so got it all running, normal stuff battery dead, sun roof dead, all now done, and the running, when i drove it home for the first time it was a dog, but that im sure was to be expected being sat for 6 months in all that cold weather lol.
So cleaned the inlets out,TOTALLY GUNKED UP and repaired a water leak, and now runs a little better, at that point no engine light
The revs at that time were sitting around 650 at idle ( i thought a little high)
Also sometimes the revs would hold at 2000 pm, drop then rise again for a few mins, then it would settle down.
But now the revs sit at 500 RPM at idle but now the engine light is on,,,,, any ideas
its not reving as much now, and also when i give it some stick it splutters at the higher revs, thinking it prob just needs a dam good run or a service,,,,, would this clear the light issue or do i have something more serious????
also is it the pedal trick or paper clip test i need to do ??? if so does anyone have a link on how to do it .

thanks in advance

If it`s the "spanner" light coming on you`ll need the pedal trick

If you do the pedal trick you`ll get 0420/0430 which relates to the pre-cats (hence "engine" light) which is a common problem on the 2.6/3.2. Worth the pedal trick just to see if you have any more faults. Read this for an explanation of why your "engine" light (emissions light) is on http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1253462747 :y

Emissions light on doesn`t necessarily mean the car will fail an MOT emissions test

Just done the pedal test, flashed up loads of things and lost count all the time lol so will video it and then write it down tomorrow lol
whats the worst one to have light up the one with the spanner or the one i have,,,, im thinking the one i have is down to emissions mainly

Infact the other thing that springs to mind is when i give it GAS, the sounds like a rattle comming from the exhaust, could this be a dead cat??

The "worst" one would be the "spanner" as you would have a fault in the engine management system, but, conversely, the "engine" light could also mean that the cat is knackered (unlikely as it`s usually just down to below par cat efficiency). Rattling from the exhaust vicinity could possibly be cat disintegrating or rearbox baffles but I would hazard a guess at worn/busted exhaust rubber mountings or a loose heatshield.

Could be plugs or coilpacks. Have you checked the plugwells for signs of oil (sign of leaking camcover gaskets). Check coilpacks for any signs of corrosion/water ingress. The DBW engines i.e. 2.2/2.6/3.2 will throw a code for misfires whereas the 2.0/2.5/3.0 won`t.
Idling variances tend to point to throttle body if idle is uneven or air leak on the vac system if idles rises quite high then falls, then rises ad infinitum
