Seems like we, those of us who pay tax anyway, are bankers. I was very careful and double checked my spelling.
Northern Rock, Nationalised.
They will be nationalisig the railways next, and road transport, and buses. I shall stop as I feel the begining of a rant coming on.

Hopefully Northern Rock was only nationalised because the treasury handled the whole affair with such total incompetence that they made the bank worthless in the private sector.

And speaking of the treasury, does Alistair Darling bleach his hair, or put mascara in his eyebrows? ;D

How come investors want bailing out when things go wrong, do you ever hear them complaining when things go well, surly this is what investing is all about
I mean investors, not the ordinary guy or girl who has savings in Northern rock.

No one should buy shares without understanding that if the business in which they are investing doesn't have a sound business model they will lose their money. IMHO, the government opened a can of worms when they started pouring taxpayer's money into a failing business. That turned it into a failing business with a huge debt to repay.

It would have been nice to see the public money used to indemnify the public who risked losing their savings but they should have let the business that remained be sold for its market value or fold.

As usual this government rushed into a knee jerk reaction and thinking no further ahead than the next morning's headlines.

I sincerely hope that no further public money gets wasted paying off the shareholders.

i agree with a lot of what you say ,but i suppose the other side of the coin is if the bank had collapsed it may have had a domino effect and took the others(and whats left of the economy)with it. :-/

True. Who knows what the consequences would have been? However, I also think that if a more considered, and less public rescue had been made when the problem started to become apparent, rather than a week or two later when the media were all over it, it would have made all the difference.

Either way, the current situation is that the company is worthless without a buyer so exactly how much should the shareholders be compensated for the nationalisation?

couldnt agree more no doubt alistair spent weeks looking for his a*se while gordon spent weeks looking for his elbow,no doubt making a bad situation worse.also the fsa should be keeping an eye on these things on our behalf.in the situation they are in now i think us taxpayers(the new shareholders)should be the first priority, but i wont be holding my breath ;)
