Depends on kit.

Can't imagine any kit working well with early headlights.  Also, DfT take a very dim view of aftermarket kits.

Technically, you need an automatic washing system and an automatic levelling system. Early Elites may get through these hoops.

Rather than a crappy kit from egay, consider getting 2nd hand HID headlights from a breaker, assuming you can meet DfT's other requirements (see FAQ area of this site)

The head light washers don't need to be automatic, you just need to have them fitted on the car.

You haven't got self levalling lights unless you already have xenon lights fitted from the factory, are you on about self levelling rear suspension? They are totally unrelated systems.

I recently sold a set of xenon lights complete with bulbs and ballasts on Flea-bay, some people do remove the ballast from the underside of the headlight and sell them separately though...

Suspension levelling is acceptable according to DfT

Speaking of self-levelling for HIDs..

The stock self levelling system - I know the suspension levelling only happens once per journey (when you turn the key); is the HID levelling happening constantly in response to the travel of the front suspension arm (if memory serves that's where the sensor is attached)?

Yes, except there are sensors mounted on the front and rear suspension that monitor how high each end of the car is, these send a signal to an e.c.u. which then adjusts the lights so that the beam pattern is always in the same position, this process happens constantly...

Aha, I was close then - thanks for that :) I suspect mine might not be doing it's thing (at least on other cars you can visible watch the lights go from 'down' to 'normal' on power-on, and on mine you can't) so I was wondering if popping a sensor arm off and wiggling it would make for a poor mans version of a Tech2 session (much like you can do with the levelling suspension) :)

You can fit xenon headlights from the last of the top of the range Vectra CDX's into any other model/age of Vectra (very easy to do -just a case of matching the colour coded wires and ignoring the left over ones!) and not bother with squirties or any form of beam adjustment and I virtually guarantee that as long as the light beam is in the right place then they will pass an M.O.T.

Most likely on the Omega that the fault is within the headlight unit it's self, the adjusters become brittle and snap with age.

I did wonder that - but then I don't notice the lights wobbling up and down randomly (which I believe is a symptom).. another job to add to the list, anyway!

The sensors on the suspension have a habit of  the arms popping off too. The wiring by the HID levelling ECU in the wheel arch is also prone to chafing.

If you disconnect the front HID levelling sensor you should be able to move it and watch the headlight beams follow it.

Note that this system does not wind the headlights up and down on startup like some others do. If the beam location is correct they will not move. You might see a small adjustment at startup but that's all.
