Switched ignition wire colour
« on: 25 January 2011, 17:10:42 »

Im fitting an aftermarket headunit to my ex police car. The connectors for the wiring have been chopped. I have located and wired up all the speakers, the permanent live and earth, but i cant find a switched ignition. What colour should it be?

I can't help with the colour of the ignition live, but why don't you go to the scrap yard & cut yourself a section of loom,,  and then when you match the colours with your car you won't need to know what each colour of wire is for.  ;)  ;)

up around the courtesy light the ignition live is black .....  :-/

That would be my guess too. Not impossible it's something else, but unlikely.

Definitely black...

But just had a look at the connector on mine and the only black wire that I can see
is a thin one in a group of three. 1 black, 1 blue and one yellow which appear to be for the cd changer :-/

Normally there is a way of joining/swapping the permanant/switched lives on the loom from the head unit to the car. This has always been the case with all the gay sony headunits that I've owned. Only mention it as switched live could be irrelevant. :-/

I have been using it with the perm live fed into both switched live and ignition live, but while i had the dash apart i wanted to make it work as its supposed to.

Only mention this as the head units, being aftermarket/universal, can be fitted to cars with or without a switched live to the radio, a permanent live being for the memory.

Andy's suggestion is probably the best one. IIRC, the radio loom is about a foot long, and plugs into the main loom above the drivers footwell somewhere. :-/
