Whoops!!!!!!!!!!
« on: 12 June 2010, 16:09:22 »

I've been trying to find the cause of my auxilery fans (2 at front) not working. So have been checking fuses and relays and generally poking about.......

I pulled out fuse 15 which has a long list of things which it protects, amongst which are the cooling fan, sunroof and the dashboard lights.  I think that I left the ignition on when I pulled it, because now I've no dashboard lights and the sunroof dosn't work!!  The car starts and then the battery light comes on...

I've disconnected the battery and will leave it for an hour or so, to see if it will magically reset itself...... I've a sense of doom.........

Reconnected the battery and still no dashboard lights, apart from indicators and main beam lights.  Also the rev counter, fuel and temp gauge arn't working. :(

It starts fine, but the battery light comes on.  When driven the battery light flashes and the rev counter and speedo 'twitch' in time with the battery light! :(

I seem to remember that there is a way to reset the intrument panel??  Really need help here please!!!! :'( :'(

First things first. Get our hands on a multi-meter and follow this guide http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1225724099
The symptons you describe relate to voltage regulator playing silly buggers as already stated.. Post up your results.
You`d be surprised what a faulty reg. pack does to an Omega`s circuitry :o

Thanks for that Rob!  :y

One thing I forgot to mention earlier, is that everthing else is working normally, headlights, wipers, windows, sunroof, radio etc, etc.  Which makes me wonder if theres a gremlin in the instrument panel and if it can be reset?  If the voltage reg is knackered, would everthing else work?  :-/

I'll check it over tomorrow with a meter, off to watch the footie now ;D

Re: Whoops!!!!!!!!!! (Meter Readings)

Just checked the battery/alternator reading with a digital meter.  The numbers are as Kevin's guide.

3) Terminal voltage = 12.22
4) Terminal voltage with load (headlights full, blower full) = 11.60
6) Terminal Voltage idling = 14.23
7) Fast idle = 14.26
8) Idle with load (as above) = 13.73
9) Fast idle with load = 13.80

I think that I got abit panicky yesterday when the dash lights and dials stopped working, and assumed that I'd breaked it!!   :o :o  While I was checking it out again this morning, I realised that I hadn't replaced fuse 15 or it dropped out.  So put a new fuse in and now all is working again.... Phew, phew, phew, :-[ :-[ :-[

I think I'll get someone who knows what they're doing to check out my fan/AC problem...... ::) ::) ::) Anyone fancy it?? :-? :-?

Thanks for the replies and Thanks in advance for any comments re. the voltage readings  :y :y :y

Did you get to the bottom of your fan problem ?  ( I'm new here ).  If you didn't I can give you details of the test connector in the engine bay fuse box, this is VERY usefull for the complicated bunch of relays etc. that run all the fans in the engine bay.

Fan test connector info: Open the engine bay fuse and relay box, and you'll see a 6 pin test connector attached to relay K87 ( count 6 back from front of car ).  Pins are numbered 123 left to right, 456 right to left. With pin1 top row left if you look at the connector with the two keys on your left hand side. ( I'll try and post a picture as soon as I've worked out how.. Can't find an upload option ).

My car has 3 fans, two ostensibly for the air conditioning, in front of the air con radiator right at the front, and one behind the engine's radiator.

Pin 1 = coolant temp switch output stage 1 ( quite hot )
Pin 2 = pressure switch output
Pin 3 = +12 ignition on - via fuse 29 on my 3.2 Elite - NOT fuse 15
Pin 4 = coolant temp switch output stage 2 ( very hot )
Pin 5 = coolant temp switch output linked to air con
Pin 6 = earth

So, if you earth the following pins, the folowing happens ( or should )
Pin 1 when earthed, runs both air con fans slowly.
Pin 2 when earthed, runs NS air con fan fast.
Pin 3 +12 V ( Don't earth this !, unless you want to blow a fuse ! )
Pin 4 when earthed, runs radiator fan ( big one behind radiator )
Pin 5 when earthed, runs NS air con fan fast. ( Same as 2, but via a different relay ).

Hope this is a help.

See next post for diagram.
