Main beam headlight adjustment
« on: 14 February 2011, 13:41:30 »

I have xenon headlights but I can't get the the 2 inner lights to point level with the ground. They act light search lights shining up into the trees. As there is no error msg on the MID I presume the self levelling system is working. Can anyone tell me how to adjust the lights.

Assuming your adjusters aren't broken (I bet they are!), then its the inner 2 adjuster that control height. Outer 2 adjust left/right.

Many thanks for your reply but where about are these adjusters located both for the vertical and horizontal as I am not too sure they are pointing straight ahead either?

Main beam lights are "unaimed"... Generally, if the dipped beam lights are correctly aligned the main beam shouldn't be too far out ;)

Must admit, I found the main beam disappointing when compared to the Xenon dipped beam light output so I've upgraded the main beam bulbs :y

I would agree about the performance of the headlights. Had a Carlton back in the early 90's & before that a Manta GTE. The lights on both were as dim as a toc h lamp. Would have thought GM would have managed to get it right by now. However back to the point, what bulbs did you fit & do you know where the adjusters are for adjusting the beam Many thanks. :(

Vauxhall lights have always been substandard.  Something that they still haven't resolved with the Insignia...

I'm an "expert" on this....Expert in so far that I've sent weeks on headlight problems....learning a ton of info from my friends on OOF.

Depends on how high they are shining. As mentioned, odds are that the adjusters are broken (they sit inside the headlamp).

Think you'll HAVE to remove the lights from the car to find out the cause of the problem. There is an excellent "how to" on here.

IF they are shining way high then the motor arms may have come detached, again something you can check when you remove the headlights from the car. At one point that's what happened to me. If so it can be rectified.

Adjuster wise, I THINK I might be right to say, CAN be checked without removing the lights.

Take a bulb cover off and see if you can easily move the lense around through the hole. I could, the adjusters were flubbered.

I replaced the entire lights with some from a wreckers, amazingly with the adjusters in one piece, problem gone away.

First time you try to remove the headlights allow an hour or so but....TRUST ME....by the 7th millionth time it literally takes 5 mins.

Bear in mind that if you fiddle with the adjusters you will be moving the whole light unit, so adjusting the dipped beam too :y

Osram Nightbreakers come highly recommended, although I went for Phillips +80% bulbs and am happy with them :y

Also it takes a lot of turns on the adjusters for small movement of light beams!

Many thanks for your help. Adjusters not broken, just not moving, presume they are seized, so will try some WD40 and have another go. :y

Just be careful with them cause they are very brittle and can crack easily

Many thanks for all your help, the "boy" however has been proved right. The adjusters are broken. The lens is just floating around inside the headlight. Is it poss to fix this & if so how? :-?
