Fancy an MP3 input on your Omega Stereo ?
« on: 04 April 2011, 17:14:43 »

Thought that would get your attention !!

OK, I have managed to source a device that may solve some of the problems here.

This little box of tricks  plugs in line with your head unit speaker outputs by means of an ISO style "T-Connector" and has a 3.5mm stereo audio input that can be used with your iPod/iPhone/MP3 device via the headphone socket. There is a volume control that needs to be located somewhere, (on a fly lead) and thats about it.

When the MP3 player is switched on, this box will auto detect the sound from your device, mute the sound from the head unit and play directly through the speakers using its own built in amplifier.

This means that whatever your standard setup (except those of you running BOSE, sorry guys) you can simply plug this in line and listen to your audio whilst retaining all the originality and features of the original head unit.

All track controls, etc, would be done on the device itself, and there is no integration with steering controls or display - this is purely a basic playback device to give you some sounds.

I`m haggling over the prices at the moment with the manufacturers, but am trying to get the RRP £149.99 price down to around the £99.99 mark - but that really depends on how many of you would be interested and what sort of quantity I have to import.

What are your thoughts?

By its nature, it wouldn't work too well with Satnav functions of NCDC, Traffic Master, or phone kits either integrated (CCRT) or linked to headunit?

Correct - Any audio sounds or interrupts would not come through whilst listening to the external device - you make your choice to listen to satnav or iPod, you cannot have both simultaneously.

But this was the best option I could find for those who struggle with FM modulators.

This would also be the perfect option for those of you with CAR300 / CAR 400 / CCR2006 (Non BOSE) units that don`t even have an external changer input option either

Surely for that price and function its a better idea to just install a Parrot MKi9200

Does exactly the same, but also charges an ipod/ iphone. Has USB and line in audio connections, has remote that can be mounted anywhere to control it.

Runs through the head unit speakers plus i'm lead to believe there is a patch lead so the sat nav will mute the parrot when it needs to, BUT this might only be for full CAN cars, still to see anyone who has one

Plus you get the added bonus of a bluetooth handfree kit - and yes you can have ipod on and a separate bluetooth phone connected at the same time

Oh and its what i have in my Signum with 2015 and telematics so know how good it is and how easy to install

Just my 2p of course  :)

Whilst the Parrot is certainly a viable option in my mind, I`ve had to start looking elsewhere for another solution as people keep coming back to me saying that they either do not like or do not want the Parrot.

Unsure why though - some people are so fickle !!

Will the Parrot work with a Bose system?

The parrot does not connect as such. It has it's own built in amplifier and just uses the car's speakers. Have one my Omega and the stereo only gets switched on when I want the radio. It cannot use the MID or the steering wheel controls, but with it's own display and remote it's not really an issue.
Sound quality is decent and equivalent to standard stereo. Not sure how it compares to Bose and there would need to be some adapting to use the 2 ohm speakers.
I like all the connection options - SD card, memory stick, line in and ipod plus bluetooth streaming. The phone bluetooth and voice recognition work pretty good with my Nokia N97.
£169 from Halfords and easy install. They recommend an extra SOT cable to set up, but with the lack of room behind the stereo I just cut the speaker block off the original loom and installed without it.

Not according to their website, sadly (due to the fact that the HU 'speaker' output is driving the Bose amp on Bose equipped cars, not the speakers directly as the Parrot is designed to do)

You could try to wire it in 'after' the Bose amp (since the wiring all comes back to the drivers side kick panel, IIRC?), but then the 2Ohm speakers would probably fry the Parrot anyway - or the Parrot (which I imagine has 4Ohm impedence) would fry the Bose amp..
