Speedometer illumination bulb
« on: 13 April 2011, 21:05:34 »

One of the bulbs that illuminates the speedometer and rev counter on my estate has just failed.  What type of bulb do I need  to replace it?

lamps are 504's  :y

do all 4,

and also do the 4 from the mid as well, chances are you wont be running on 4, most people dont notice theyve blowen, till the last one goes, and your likely to disturb them anyway with removal.

I get mine from :

speedo : http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/504-w5w-capless-wedge-car-interior-bulbs/

With regard to dashboard illumination, is it the bulbs that give the "orange glow" or is there a coloured covering on the dash?

If that makes sense?  ::)

yep, I had same problem a while back when one half of display went into darkness. Local dealer wanted around £90 to fix but following the excellent walk-through tutorial on here I did the job myself in about 10minutes and it cost a couple of quid for all the bulbs from local vx dealer (saw bulbs much cheaper on ebay but couldnt wait).As Im far from mechanically minded  :-[ even this small job gave me quite a bit of satisfaction! Only slight problem I remember was worrying whether I could access the screw behind the steering columb but, yes, there is enough movement in the cowling! Thanks to the helpful members on here several p[ounds saved and a job well done :y

IIRC the speedo bulbs are 3W, not 5W  :-/ Of course you can use 5W and adjust the brightness with the wheel but then again all other illumination becomes too dim imho  :y
