help needed before i get stuck in the back seat trying to reach, will my 98 gls have the correct wiring for the 96 leather lecky elite seats or have i taken on a challenge thanks jonny

The way you can tell is as follows.

Take out the rear ciggy lighter from its hole & stick your thumb in. Then, at an angle pull and remove the whole panel with the lighter and pull it out.

If there is a connector to either side of the lighter then you are in luck. These are the sockets for the switches - just held into place. The wiring from them goes through to under the rear seats. If those connectors are not there then it gets more difficult.

I've got a seat of black leather heated rears if you are interested.

thanks rob that makes sense, for the quickest way to check i ll have a look at the tonight i already have the 96 full interior so one way or another it will be made to fit, however im a little concerned over the process for the front seat ie drivers being a memory seat, should be fun as i think ill be missing at least one loom cheers jonny :-/

Be careful. The seatbelt pre-tensioners are different on the 96 and 98 cars and the '98s have side aibags.

Best to sell the '96 on and buy a front pair of '99s from me - they will fit a treat

prefacelift (pre 1998) seats will cause problems if fitted to later cars.

ok looms are in the car in the back which makes that nice and straight froward, what sort of problems are we talking with the 96 fitting to the 98, there are no airbags to contend with just the seat belt pretensioners to tackle and possibly base modifications i can think of, although i like the style of lincs robert i may end up needing later ones yet

Only if you have the rest of the loom + relays

Relays are clipped behind cut-outs in the bodywork below where the front of the rear seatbase sits

The PFL seats have mechanically activated pre-tensioners - which are fired electrically.

There should be a red plastic locking key that stops these going off when not in the car - caused by any shock caused by handling/storage etc.

If you dont fit these as soon as the seat is about to be removed from the car you risk the tensioner being activated.

The MFL ones dont suffer from this problem.

I would not fit PFL seats in an MFL car for this reason alone - let anone any loss of airbag function - you will also probably invalidate your insurance IMHO.

We need to ascertain the age of your 98 car. What is the last letter of your VIN?

If its V, the 96 seats are OK, if its W, they are unsuitable.

You have to get seats from a minifacelift (last letter of VIN W or X).

Trying to fit yours will bring on the airbag light, disabling the entire SRS system (airbags, pretensioners), which would be a pretty retarded thing to do, esp when minifacelift seats are frequently available for reasonable money. It would also invalidate your insurance, unless you informed them you had disabled the the cars safety systems.


What is the fascinatin with leather? Both my Omegas have it, its horrible. Hot in summer, freezing in winter, and not a patch on Elite cloth, comfortwise
