Hi - please excuse my asking as there do seem to be loads of posts about this topic but I am not sure if the alarm and powersounder are one and the same or two different bits.

For the last few months i have had something honking when I stop the engine - not always but most times after longer journeys - this I am led to believe is the powersounder temming me the battery is on its way out.

Now I am getting what I take to be the alarm going off randomly (a much higher alternating note / whine). Strangely it prefers to go off in the early hours but will also continue to sound when I start the car and drive off so it is not immobilising the car!

Do I just need to unplug the unit from under the scuttle cowling to disable or is there more?

I am really not bothered about keeping this unit functioning as the car will soon be gone so I just need to be able to lock it without annoying the neighbours!

The alarm system has 2 sounders. The one that you are referring to is called the powersounder and islocated under the scuttle and is designed to sound if the power to the main car battery is severed during an activation. You are right that it will bleep 4 times to tell you that the batteries that back its power up are failing.  You can simply unplug this unit and bin it, or you can replace it with a new unit (approx. 50 quid from vxl) in order to keep full functionality of the alarm.  To my knowledge these are sealed units, and the battery cannot be replaced. 

Either way, I would get the scuttle off and get its disconnected asap, as there have been several instances of failing/failed powersounders causing fires!!

There are some on here who have been able to chop them open to replace the internal batteries, but not really worth the hassle when a new one with a warranty is so readily available from the main dealer. It must also be noted that your insurance requires you to have one of these fitted

Job done now!

The longest parts were finding my torx bit and rinding the release tab for the plug!

There was something leaking out from around the plug area but my fingers have not melted yet so probably not acid.
