I was winding in the piston with a clamp... it was being a bit stubborn.. and broke a chunk outta the piston!

I've put all the brakes back together and they seem OK, but I'm by no means happy about that caliper, so I intend to replace before the car gets used !!

As long as the piston seal is intact you should be ok for now. Shame it couldn't be repaired with something like chemical metal.

There are two types of rear caliper from memory depending on whether you have vented or solid rear disks. I think they are also the same as Senator, Carlton and possibly Vectra B V6 calipers so you shouldn't have too much problem getting one.

I doubt that would be substantial enough for a brake component?  :-/

No probably not. Only really temporary to get you to the scrappie. Piston needs to be able to slide cleanly.

Shouldn't be to hard to get one or two calipers from a scrappy or eBay, though I think i'd be tempted to fit new seals on them.

Hey I think I know what's wrong with the caliper?
  It's not fitted to the car and has no pads in it. So stoping will be FUN  ;D  ::) or am I just a late with my answer
