Omega - Fit For A King... (Not Any More)
« on: 06 March 2008, 13:51:55 »

I remember seeing stock video footage of HRH Prince Charles stepping out of his Omege Elite, exactly the same colour and spec as mine (see link below) and thinking 'yep, definitely fit for a King...!'

And then this from today's news:

Prince Charles appealed for British schools, hospitals and the Army to buy British in an effort to support local farming, but it emerged that he had signed a £100,000 deal to replace his Vauxhall Omega car, produced in Britain, for a German Audi.

The prince's spokeswoman defended his decision to buy a German car.  She said: "Vauxhall have decided to stop making Omegas so he has had to pick another car and has chosen Audi."

Pah!

Was it 'dangle berries', made in Rosselheim in Germany!

Yeah, I can just see him coming here and deciding to read a few maintenance guides, roll his sleeves up, sort out those pesky cam cover gaskets, clean the breathers out and change the HBV rather than have a spanking new A8 courtesy of the British public. ;D

Can you imagine what Omegas would be like if they had been "produced in Britain"?

Oh yes; but then agin it`s hardly surprising Charles has (Ahem!) "Germanic inclinations".....it`s in the family you know!  ;D

I guess my Google Alerts aren't as up to date as they make out. Not that it matters...

Whether this story is old or not, it does kinda beg the question 'shouldn't the royals, and those in government, who are responsible for promoting British design, engineering and production etc, on home turf and abroad, be projecting the 'right image' by electing British products, or at least British marques, as (in this case) their motors of choice?'

I realise his Omega was probably getting on a bit and a new motor was required, but surely opting for an overtly German car sends out the wrong signals to the already ailing motor industry in the UK.

Of course then we get in to the debate of trying to FIND a British car for him to cruise about in in the first place!
