Not an Omega owner, found this site as I have been following the conversion from yabb to smf with interest.

Age 56, worked on heavy commercials since leaving school. A lot of interesting topics, hopefully be able to join in some of the discussions.

Hello & Welcome, conversion seems to have gone quite well, all things considered.

Hi JustJohn :)

The conversion from YaBB 2.5AE to SMF2.0.1 was relatively painless, given that we had it well planned , and had done about a dozen test migrations before doing it live.

If its something you are considering doing, feel free to drop me a PM here, on YaBB's main site (on the rare occasions it runs at a usable speed), Carsten's YaBB site or SMF's forum. I am on all of them as TheBoy or The Boy. I can tell you all the pitfalls, and what bits don't migrate nicely.

I am certainly aware of a fair few YaBB forum admins looking to go the same way :y

Thanks for the offer, on all of them sites as "depablo". YaBB main site is a pitiful place, dont know why they don't stick it in maintenance mode and save the embarresment. Pointed your site out to Tonyvic, he said he might get in touch as he's considering converting his own large forum to SMF later in the year.

SMF does present new challenges - not sure we've got MySQL optimised very well yet (some good tips on SMF's site), and the software is still new to us, so not got the best from it yet, but its certainly quicker, and easier to manage. And search is wonderful to have, as YaBB's was unusable.  All our backend scripts are being rewritten - sitemap scripts, autolock threads, backups, management etc, so still further work there.
