Accident and now tyre noise
« on: 09 October 2011, 09:46:17 »

Hi guys
I had a bit of a bump and now the headlamp wobbles... LHD and it's the passenger side - it's ruined the aim.  Had an argument with a concrete verge in the road.  Quite a bit of damage - wishbone, shocker, hub... pics here.

It's been aligned, but now it feels as though a wheel is buckled even though it's been checked.

Any idea what else could cause this noise?

Subframe could well be distorted.  Hard to tell from pic, has the A post deformed - if so, thats probably written off.

If the impact was hard enough to rip the balljoint off the end of the wishbone I would expect a buckled wheel was pretty much guaranteed  :-\

The impact on the tyre wall might also have caused delamination, there might be a bulge on the inside of the tyre causing vibration?

I would swap the wheel to the rear of the car and see if the vibration goes with it.

Looking at the lowest point of the wheel it looks distorted to me. Would also imagine the vertical mount point for the wishbone is probably distorted as well

Thanks for the advice guys...

The tyre was replaced and the wheel repaired (only cosmetic damage, I believe) and sprayed.

The front wheel was put on the back....

Does feel like a buckled wheel tho...

Did the back wheel hit the same concrete lump?

Please confirm that you had a new wishbone, the strut looks bent too, meaning it will be well out even on full adjustment. Try getting the car absolutely level, then measuring the amount of lean on the wheel. Compare with the other (good) side.

Don't assume that rear wheel balance is unimportant. It is possible vibration from the rear of the car is shaking everything hard enough tat you feel it through the steering.

It is also possible that the shock of the impact dislodged or broke the headlamp adjuster on the passenger side  :-\
