Coolant leak
« on: 09 October 2011, 17:50:29 »

Hi everyone,

Recently I replaced the battery since the old one died, and then I gave the car to my dad, thinking he'd use it while I was away for two weeks for work, thus preventing the battery from draining if there's an electrical issue. He didn't even start it once, but thankfully there were no further issues and the car started just fine.

Except that while it was standing there, the radiator apparently developed what I'd call a moderate leak. I could drive it in an emergency or to a mechanic, but it's leaking a bit too much to comfortably drive every day. Luckily, I recently bought an NB MX-5, I just need a warm hat so I can drive it in this weather :D. So I just drove my Omega for a while to heat the car up, and was able to see the problem fairly easily, as steam was coming off from the spot:

It already dried out a bit while I went to get the camera, but I think it's pretty clearly coming from here, I'd say where the plastic and aluminium parts are joined.

Can those little clips be clamped tighter, or is there a gasket or something that can be replaced or sealed somehow? Any other suggestions? A new radiator is the obvious solution, but I'd rather spend the money on the much needed rocker/valve cover gasket, timing belt, camshaft seal, and rust fixing right now.

Thanks!

I'm not in the UK, but in the Czech Republic :). So it's an Opel, and I just realized that i didn't say that it's a post-facelift B with climate control (apparently it matters ???).

By the way, I did check the other coolant leak topic (it's still on the first page even), but it seems to involve a completely different spot.

Have a look at this thread, especially reply #7:
