just had head gasket done on my 2.2 petrol auto by garage and everything is fine apart from the
engine runs cooler now and there is no heat from the heater, I think it may the thermostat sticking open

any ideas girls

Not female, but have an idea!

If the headgasket failed as a result of an over heat, then would suggest the thermostat should be changed as a matter of course.  This would not necessarily cause no heat in the cabin, just a long time to warm up to normal, and a noticeable drop in temp at motorway speeds.

Could just be that a "bit of cr*p" fell in to one of the water ducts when the head was off, and it has blocked the thermostat open (just had something very similar on a Discovery)

  yeah could be eh?  the garage didnt change the thermo or the pump
they charged £500 .
the motorway temp stays constant now at just under half way on dash and the air that comes from the heater is just under or around cool
Is it easy enough to change the thermo on a 2.2 petrol ?

10-15 minute job. Follow rad top hose down and thermo housing at the end of it. Couple of bolts

Start engine from cold, feel top radiator hose as engine warms up.

If it warms gradually, thermostat 'code F'.

If it stays cool, then suddenly gets warm as engine nears full operating temp, thermostat OK.

Easily changed if necessary.

  10- 15 minutes sounds doable for me then,  anything to pull out or rip away and would a factored  part be ok?

I fitted a factored part from GSF Spares, it worked out £17 ish with trade discount, have not had any ill effects yet, have only done 3k miles with it and it has been in since July.

Do check it is faulty as described by Abiton before you pull it out.

Hi again      changed the thermostat at a part cost of £14.99, didnt take 10-15 mins though, more like all morning, one of the bolt heads was worn and took patience to get it out, anyway job done but still very little or no heat from heater.
Air and directions are as they should be but justy no heat even on Hi !!!     any ideas would be really helpful as the frosty mornings are here again

Check if heater hoses going through bulkhead are hot, if yes possible blocked matrix. You may still have an airlock in the system. Engine idling, heater set to max, fans at max, vents open, header tank cap off, then "burp" the hose.

Forgot to add. Are hoses from HBV connected correctly. Hose from engine to single spigot, top hose from bulkhead to top of the "double" spigots, bottom to bottom

tried driving for around 8 miles at norm temp with cap off to try to purge it but still the same
if matrix is blocked can I unblock it without removing it ?

The part about spigots and bottom to bottom,   

sorry just acting my age nearing the twilight bit, 
the hose going through the bulkhead at the top is warm to hot but,  the one below it is cool to cooler
had a fiddle around and the small hoses seem to be sort of just hanging, cannot remember them being like that
mmmm
