V6 Thermostat
« on: 22 October 2011, 14:04:58 »

Had the thermostat changed at the stealers, before I knew better ::), 4 years and 16000 miles ago.

I think it's gone again, temp doesn't even reach 80 anymore.  :(

Is four years the going time for a thermostat? Is a 'stat from buypartsbuy OK to fit?

I was going to do mine this weekend. Popped into the agents to be told they don't keep it in stock, have to order, and it was £63 + vat  :'( :'( :'( > OK, I guess that's the whole assembly, you can get the actual stat from fleabay for around £10.

I got mine from Vauxworld and it's been fine.  The only thing is that it didn't come with the O rings and it was too late by the time I realised, so I reused the old ones with a smear of gunk.... :-[  I think they leak slightly, so make sure you get the new O rings as well  :y

I've fitted quite a few of these in the past and never had a problem :y

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vauxhall-OMEGA-VECTRA-etc-V6-THERMOSTAT-HOUSING-NEW-/370148171910?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item562e8ce086#ht_1417wt_948

So this is basically the same 'stat and housing that would be obtained from Vauxhall?

Its worth while checking up on engine numbers before buying one. I didn't, the one that came off is 17.5mm thick at the flange, the new one is only 5.5mm thick. The bolts were too long, and I had to put a 12mm spacer under both.

Even the genuine one I recently bought was the same. Had to cut the bolts down. Alternatively, it is possible to swap the thermostat into the old housing if it's in reasonable condition.

I adopted the bodgeit and scarper approach, I might need the long bolts again, so  fitted a washer and 2 plain M8 nuts onto bolt. Now about right size, job done !  :y :y :y

I am half way thro an LPG install, what a load of pipes  :P
