I bought a hot start fix box on ebay works fine car starts first time every time, The box over-rides the temp sensor in the pump so heaters work on every start-up. My 2.2dti had the same problems as yours has

Heater plugs work for every start up on that engine AFAIK. They also stay on for approx 2 mins afterglow after startup. It's just when temp is colder it puts heater light on dash to give more time before startup. Would have suspected air leak causing fuel to run back to tank.

yeah have hand primer fitted and its not leaking from anywere, that was my first taught air leaking in and fuel returning to tank but if it starts perfect after heater light comes on, so if like clarkey said that they come on every start up i think its time to replace glow plugs. was looking at them hot start fix on ebay, are they handy to fit rob.

Hi
I had exactly the same difficulty on my car at about 115k. Eventually changed the glow plug control module which fixed it completely.
This is located in the triangular plastic box near your right wing as you look at the engine bay from in front. Now done 160k and all has been fine since, summer and winter.

Vauxhall Part Number GM 55354141

To add a bit more detail to my glow plug problem:

Car would start well after  pre heat in cold weather. Car would crank for some time and eventually start when much warmer. It would also then kick out blue (un burnt diesel) smoke in copious quantities. The thing that I really noticed that had changed (with the fault) was that somewhere in between v. cold and v warm starting, the heater tell tale light would come on very briefly and then go out followed by an easy start up. With the module faulty, this changed to no brief heating period and poor starting. Best starting performance, with the fault was probably at about minus 2 or more. New module restored it all. Was about £50 from main dealer but could risk a used one for less?

 Other Dti problems:

Injector leak off pipes  -  poor starting
Crankshaft pulley  -  disintegrates at about 100k- its a bu%*er to get the retaining bolt off
Vacuum pipes split  -  rubber connectors split and  plastic vacuum pipe pinched  - EML light on, limp mode, Critical system fault.
EGR valve sticking- eml light on, normally intermittently but predictably- mine responded well to cleaning twice!
Prone to pump failure but I have been lucky so far,  fuel filter changed regularly though.
Sepentine belt tensioner and retaining bolt. -  Belt squeak on starting or when applying full steering lock. Can be changed without removing any other parts. Change fixing bolt at same time if you don't want it to sheer off a week later ! Also causes low  system voltage fault code on repeated short runs

Other than those points it is a brilliant car! Mine is used as a van in my business it does 20-50 miles every day  through traffic, is currently returning 43.5 mpg  and is far better than a transit despite having a little less performance than a new transit!
