Oil Consumption
« on: 29 October 2011, 19:16:45 »

Friend of mine has a 2.2 and thinks it has a high oil consumption so could anybody else express opinions comments.

He tells me it "uses " approx 1 ltr of oil per 1000 miles and this seems to be consistent .We have checked and there is no evidence of any oil leakage and car performs as normal, this has been like it now for atleast 2 years.

Just seems a lot  :o as my 13 year old V6 uses less than 0.25 lts from 1, 5k oil change to another and that has over 190k on it ;D

I find it depends on driving style, kept below 85mph mine uses hardly any oil. Drive harder it uses more.

Page 216 of the owner's manual gives up to 0.6l per 1000km i.e. 1l per 1000 miles as the official spec.  So your friend's 2.2 is officially borderline.  (Owners manual at http://images.omegaowners.com/documents/UserGuides/OmegaOct2002.pdf - a few megs to download)

If you ask me this is pure backside covering from GM as most petrol Omegas don't need to be topped up at all between their 5000 mile oil changes.  So something is starting to go wrong IMHO.  I would start by finding out where the oil is going - main possibilities being dribbling down the engine, a big puff of smoke first start of the morning, or burned off during normal driving.

Check singns of any oil leaks, if no leaks then cylinder head valve stems. In case of bad scenario stuck oil control rings. If there is any stem or ring problem you must experience blue smoke (starting - valve stems, accelerating - oil control rings)

As with anyhting like this its a case of basic diag.

Are the breathers nice and clean? (crank case pressure will increase oil consumption)?
Is the right oil being used or something silly like 0W30?
Is there any sign of smoke at startup?
Is it regularly serviced or a clogged up old nail?
