Is my alternator goosed?
« on: 10 November 2011, 21:15:24 »

2002 2.6 Elite. On the way home, car running fine when the battery warning light comes on, still running fine. After a while the display begins to dim and the ABS / TC lights come on, I continue to drive but turn everything electrical off, instruments stop working the engine and steering start to feel sluggish, other lights come on including the engine management light. I got home turned the engine off, tried to start it - nothing. Voltage at the battery reads 9.8v. After a couple of hours on charge the battery shows 12.3v, engine starts and all the lights are out apart from the battery light. Checked voltage at battery with the engine running - 9.8v  :(

Alternator goosed? If it is what is the best advice for replacement?

Definetly alternator, battery should read over 12 volts with the engine running.

Never got round to it this weekend, had to sort SWMBO's Volvo for the mot. ::)
When I get round to it this week should I believe the Haynes book and remove the alternator from underneath or do the OOF experts have wiser advice?  ;)

MarksDTM has written a guide on reconditioning the alternator, if that's any help.

Got the old one off, pig of a job getting to the back of the top bolt, in the end I held the torx head with an 11mm ring spanner as i couldn't get a ratchet and torx socket in! Cleaned the bottom of the block and surrounding area while it was accessible, new alternator fitted (£90 through a mate in the trade). Now working as it should - I'm happy.  :)
