going to dublin in the next 2 or 3 weeks, looks like it will be liverpool im travelling from, but the timetable from p&o say its over 7 hrs sailing? is that correct?
also, i really want to get there as cheaply as possible but im led to believe that i cant travel as a foot passenger and must travel with car?

anyone have any info on whats correct and not? and if you can suggest the cheapest way of getting there that would be great.

odd that you can't travel by foot and car only but the 7hrs is about right. I used to work Swansea Cork and that took 10hrs.
If you want to go as foot passenger may be worth looking at flights instead

There's a fastcat crossing from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire (Dublin) that I've taken the Westfield on many times. It's only a couple of hours, IIRC. You need a cast iron stomach to keep your all day breakfast onboard if it's rough, but other than that, it's great.

Ah, memories! I did a crossing to the continent (Harwich to Hoek van Holland, I think) in a cat when it was very rough once; from where I was sitting it felt like the windward side was going up & down 20ft while the leeward was stationary, walking down the stairs for a pee was an epic struggle of balance vs a rapidly moving target, and all around me people were losing their lunch into bins, hats, bags..

Last time we came back they warned us that they would be making a turn cross wind and that it would get rough.

I was fine sitting in my seat, but judging by the crash of crockery, the galley didn't heed this warning.

If I lived in Dumfries I would get the HSS from Stranraer or Cairnryan to Belfast and then get the train to Dublin.
The sailing time of 7 hours Liverpool to Dublin sounds about right.

Unless you have other plans in Liverpool I would suggest you are making the trip hard work? As Albs can testify there is no cheap way across the Irish Sea! I have crossed many times and am posting this from the passenger deck of the Stena Caledonia!
In any case consider cheap flight from Prestwick to Dublin with that budget airline, booking in advance or watching for offers. If you take into account all the travelling and the time spent on board the ferry, you could almost be there and back if you flew. Alternatively, as suggested, cross to Belfast from Stranraer and then bus or train to Dublin, but this is not that cheap either. I guess it will depend on the nature of the trip.

Agreed Jonny.Unless theres a particular reason not to fly,then Sleazyjet or Ryandare is the cheapest/quickest option.

well,   they did used to do special offer weekends ,  from holyhead,  £1 for a foot passenger to Dublin.

but no idea about current situation.....  been a while since i lived up there....    (10 years ago it was usually cheaper to go from  Holyhead to Dublin, than Holyhead to Bangor (Cymru, not N.I)
