heated seats blow fuse, not switch ? im puzzled
« on: 13 November 2011, 04:52:21 »

so last week had drivers heated seat on and it popped the fuse, heaters, heater panel lights, heated seat stoped, and steering got heavy.
so i replaced the fuse and everything worked again except the drivers heated seat, when i pushed the switch in and held it in it would heat up, as soon as i let my finger of the switch it stopped working, so i wedged in a piece of cardboard to keep it switched on and once again it popped the fuse after about 10 mins,
this time when i replaced the fuse it the switch wouldnt work atall (everything else did), so i thought it was the switch that was faulty,
elite pete kindly sent me a new switch, put it in today and it worked again, had it on for 10 mins and it popped the fuse again, the bulb that lights up to show the heated seat is switched on wasnt working, but i can tell it isnt working as when it was working and switching the seat on the dash lights slightly dim when (ignition on engine off)
so my question is i have probanly got 2 duff switches now and need another one, but what is causing them to fail and the fuse to pop ?

would say temp sesor for heated set is gone making it blow fuse and switch, check wires as well to the seat there is a sensor in the heat element, would change eliment more easyer than trying to fix, good scrap yeard will have parts and a switch. until then use a hot water bottle :y

Most likely place to start looking is the under seat wiring - occasionally, it gets nipped in runners, rear passsengers kick it, stuff gets rammed under etc etc.

Check it for insulation damage, as I suspect its grounding out somewhere.

I certainly don't think at this stage that its the temp sensor or the element itself. Potentially possible its the wiring in the seat rubber on the seat frame, but start with the easier checks ;)
