Code reader.....Will it work?.
« on: 14 November 2011, 19:38:02 »

Will a code reader that works on my 53 plate MV6 also work on Mrs Opti's 53 plate Corsa?

If it does, it might be a wise investment. :y :y

Any EOBD reader should read the engine (only) ECUs.

An EOBD (our version of the virtually identical OBDII) reader will work on all petrols registered after 2001, and all diesels registered after 2003, for Engine Only.

A Testbook (Rover's dedicated diags equipment), for example, won't be any use at all.

Varies.  About £40 for a generic one that requires a laptop, around £70 for the cheapest standalone, to several thousand for top of the range, more capable stuff.

To do all onboard systems, a Vauxhall specific device is required, such as Vauxcom, Opel Autoscanner or genuine Tech2. See FAQ.

Can someone supply a link for one of these, please?

Google for Autel Maxiscan MS509

Amongst the results you will find one to this site  ;) and lots to sales sites.

Plenty of reports of dodgy clones being sold on ebay  :( ..........

I have a MaxiScan MS509 (AFAIK a genuine one, certainly seems so anyway  :y) - very good recommendation. Works a treat on my 3.2 and should on the Corsa, neat live data, data capture, download to PC etc..

Roughly £50 on Ebay. But how can I tell a genuine from a fake?... :-\

I paid a bit more than that for mine - about £60 from 'mobile_ecu_remapping', but his prices have gone up quite a bit now: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUTEL-MAXISCAN-MS509-OBD2-ENGINE-FAULT-CODE-SCANNER-READER-TOOL-EOBD-MIL-LIGHT-/170707864020?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item27befb49d4#ht_2567wt_940

Thanks, Aaron. It might be worth paying the extra to make sure that I receive the genuine item. What does it cost to read the codes at a VX dealer. Any idea?... :y

I suspect the answer to that is "Whatever they think they can get away with" ;D I don't know, though - I wouldn't expect to get it done for less than £30 these days though :-\
