Pretty Moggie minor..wrong engine?
« on: 20 November 2011, 21:11:39 »

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MORRIS-1000-MINT-CONDITION-MUST-HAVE-MORRIS-1000-COLLECTOR-/250936107241?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3a6cf520e9
Not bidding but it's listed as having a 998 A series engine. Given the year i think the seller means 948cc. They early splitscreens were 803cc...sidevalve? They had bakelite dash/steering wheel , rare now. Then there was the 948cc which i think this is...or was....followed by the last batch which ran the 1098cc as fitted to the ubiquitous Austin/Morris BMC 1100's. Despite the last batch being badged & known as Moggie thousands they ran the 1098 lump which had a longer stroke than the 998. No Moggie ever left the factory with a 998 engine fitted, they were only fitted to minis which of course were fwd.

Sorry for being a geeky anorak. I'm not bidding so don't want to bother the seller with daft questions & i know some of you of a certain age will remember when these were every day small cars. Guy. 8)

My 1952 Morris Minor - my first car and cost me £50 !! - was a 918cc Side Valve IIRC - the 803 cc was the first A-series overhead valve one and was the MM series II

The 948 / 1098 were the Morris 1000 series .. I don't remember a 998 ever being produced .. but could be wrong .. :(

Wasnt the 998 the cooper engine ? If so it would be ( relatively) good fun to drive. :)

My father had a 948cc one - IIRC these were badged as 'Minor 1000'? :-\

That is a car that looks likes it has been worked on, modded, look at the dash.... :-\
Like the Mini engine changes were and are very common, lots have the 'A' series engine from the Marina, so I do not see why it may not have had the 'A' series, 998 fitted at some point, why fit this and not a 1100 or 1300 (1275) I do not know :) :)

The question remains, if it does run a 998 as this was only ever a fwd fitment it must have been turned round so which box/clutch is it runninng? I still think it's 948cc typing error as it's so easy to fit the RWD 1275 Marina units so why go to the trouble of fitting a 998 & which box?

Whilst I tend to agree, the 1275 engine was fitted to the Mini and Austin / Morris 1300 and the Allegro, so must be a simple swap.... :-\

Remember a Morris Minor in the late 60s fitted with the B series MGB engine and box!!

I used to own a Riley 1.5 fitted with tuned MGB engine and overdrive box - with lowered suspension - quite a quick motor in its time!!

Or my 3.8s jag engined Anglia 107E - reported earlier on OOF  :y

With a bit of effort you can fit most motors with bigger power lumps - although you need to consider upgrading brakes, suspension, drive train etc to cope.
