45 MPG.......109 MPH
« on: 22 November 2011, 17:48:08 »

Just returned from a weekend away with Mrs Opti's Corsa 1.2 SXI.  For the most part  I drove it like a nun, so I thought I'd check out the economy. I calculated the petrol consumption by brimming the tank and setting the trip.

Upon our return, I could only squeeze 8.85 gallons in. The trip showed 399 miles......returning 45.08 MPG......Reasonable, but not as good as I expected....(My MV6 returns about 30/31 on the same journey......according to the trip computer (Are they accurate?)

On a couple of occasions I managed to max her out, both times the speedo indicated 109 MPH*.........Not too shoddy for only 1199cc and a paltry 75 BHP..... :y

* Performance figures recorded on a private road in the  Midlands... :)

You're correct as usual, Cem. Mrs Opti's Corsa (2003) is much smaller and lighter than the bloated overweight 2011 model. I'm pretty sure it weighs less than 1000 KG... :y

They are about 1000Kg kerb weight (slightly shy of it).

Remember that drag factor is a major factor in fuel comsumption at speed.

I couldn't possibly say, Henryd.

However, I can say that our route from Lincolnshire to Wales took us along the M1...M69.....M6.....and M42... ;)

reason simple.. system.. car manufacturers and petrol producing companies were married long time ago ;D

technically they can build lighter cars, but it costs more with lighter materials and wont consume enough fuel.. ;D

As said, the weight is only one factor in the fuel consumption equation.

Mk1 Escort was about 800Kg but if I told you that the Corsa was wider, similar height and only slightly shorter yet had much improved safety systems, extra gears and fancy accesories such as central locking, front and rear wipers, electric screen washers, a radio, etc etc etc.....it all adds up.  ;D

It's surprising just how much bigger cars have got when you look at it like that isn't it? I suppose less space was taken up by all the safety measures back then, what you saw is what you got :)
