home broadband / no phone line
« on: 24 November 2011, 17:32:37 »

As above

For the past 4 years, i've been piggybacking off a friends wireless internet network.
He does know  ;D  I set it up for him so he gave us the password on the understanding I don't take the pish with downloads  :y

Problem is, next week he is moving so im going to be limited to a very low unsecured network signal round here or i'll have to get myself a 3G dongle.

I don't have a landline so after a quick google, I came across these   http://nextgenushull.co.uk/

Does anybody on here use anything similar or know anything about the system they use ?

Any advise / opinions welcome

That looks OK, if a tad expensive.

That looks cheap to me living in the land of Spain!

I pay 40 pounds a month for 5Gb then the speed drops to 128k so doesn't support Skype. Speed is supposed to be 3Meg but rarely reaches 1.3 Mg.

The problem is, if you want a landline, you can have either Kingston Comunications or ................ Kingston Comunications  >:( >:(
They own all the phone lines in Hull so they have the monoply  >:(
No competition so they charge what they want  >:(

You either pay for one of there packages or you get nothing

We have 2 mobile contracts in the house so no need for a landline.

Had a similar thing to that 10 years or so ago.

Company was called IONICA it was an excellent service in its day and out rated BT or any other internet service.

Unfortunately a year later they went BUMP.

I still have the reciever mounted on a pole on the side of my house and so have about another 15 houses in the street.

Well worth it when I had it :-)

Use to deal with Kingston Telecoms a long time ago, they seem to make up the rules as they go alone, the only comms company that charge more for off peak rates than the rest of the world.

Im currently waiting for fibre still where I am, so Im using an old Sony Satio HSDPA mobile (Symbian) as a Wifi Hopspot for my home, Satio gets put up on the top window whist on charge and covers the house wifi wise, works really well, as problem with dongles or bluetooth tethering is  signal can drop out within the house.

I use a PAYGO sim which costs me just over 3.00 a month for Internet, down side is Im limited to speeds of 1.1 to 2.2 Mbs, but that will do me till the fibre arrives.

Chris.

I looked into tethering my Samsung upto my laptop so I could do a little (limited) browsing and send e mails.
Then I found out ( according to 02 ) that i'm smack bang between 2 transmiters so im stuffed for a 3G signal unless I go for a walk down to the end of the street  ::) :(

No  :(

You have no chance of anything like that round here as Kingston Coms make it not viable for any other operator to offer there services  >:(
Basicly, under ofcom compertition rules, anybody can offer any service in Hull but Kc charge them so much for the line, they don't bother because they can't make a profit  >:(
So thats Sky Broadband ect all out of the window  >:( >:(

If you look to the east of the city, it is all BT so you can have any provider you want  :y
The fibre optic cable that BT use is run (look at a map) west  - east close to the banks of the Humber.

I know of some some people who are close enough to the cable that BT will run them a line into there house but your looking at maybe a couple of hundred homes  :(

The company that I have linked have tapped into this BT cable then run there own fibre optic cable which is "literally" on the rivers front upto there equipment.   Everything is wireless after that  :y
Unless Kc can find a way of chargeing people for the airwaves, we should be ok  :y
