Think I broke my Head Unit
« on: 26 November 2011, 20:11:06 »

Evening all,

Got an aftermarket headunit this afternoon, got it plugged in to test, fantastic  :y

Problem was it wouldnt turn off when I removed the key, simple fix usually swap the wires around, but in a rush to test my new toy I think I swapped the wrong wires, the fuse went pop, a lot of smoke come out and it smelt of burning  :-[

Anyways I swapped the wires back round, replaced the fuse and thought i'd try it again,

It powers up fine, but no sound coming from it, guessing i've blown the internal amp,

Can anyone confirm this, and can it be fixed?

Thanks in advance!

Which wires exactly did you swap?

Normally I swap the red and yellow, perm and ign feed,

But the wires on this headunit weremt properly colour coded, so just swapped the two with spade ends on and at a guess, was the live and ground  :o

Is it china stuff? Good brand car radios usually has safety diode inside, if you put power wires incorrectly this diode blows and makes short circuit between positive and negative. And it's really easy to fix, just change that diode. But your radio seems don't have that diode, because you still can power up radio. So that means your internal amp may be blown. Has your radio Line-out connectors? If it has, just use old earphones to check if you can hear music on these connectors. And if your Line-out works that means your have fried internal amp, because Line-out signal usually is taken before internal power amp. Good luck  :y

Connect two wires like in this picture and you should hear sound in one of your earphones:

Or you can buy 3.5mm Mini-Stereo Female to Two RCA Male cable:

but i don't think it's worth to buy it as you will use it only for one time... just use couple of wires, don't worry you won't blow anything if you short these wires together  :y

I don't think it will be under warranty if seller will find out that it is cosed of improper connection. anyway it's worth to try, maybe you will be lucky.

Most sellers woudn't have a clue....Take it back, claim it doesn't work and get another.
They'll only send it back to their supplier in an event....and THEY would probably chuck it away,
quite often not worth their time to bother with it.

I think the postage to get it to me may be more than the value of the stereo then
