E-Bay not all bad
« on: 29 November 2011, 00:22:15 »

Hi all....
E-bay gets a lot of bad press on here, but I have to say, everything I have bought on the site has been superb and saved me a lot of money.
Recently, I posted on here about laptops, as swmbo said she would buy me one for xmas. New was out of the question, so had to be used/refurbished.
So did my homework and took a chance, bid on a refurbished M90, won at 165.00, delivered within 24 hours.....and its fantastic. Like brand new :y

 :y :)
I have got to agree with you because in the many years, since it began in fact, I have been an ebay buyer/seller I have had only two buying occassions when the item was not up to sctratch and ebay refunded me almost immediately. Selling wise I have never had a problem.
If others choose to run it down then it can only be because they have either not fully read the description or were expecting far more for little money. There are some rogues who sell but they are in the minority and the policies now in place on both ebay and paypal are very firmly on the side of the buyer if there has been some problem.
I will be using it for many more years yet and do not expect any problems because I choose with care and have a realistic vision of what I can expect if the item was used. Used means used and it will be show signs of use! If new, then obviously there is no excuse for shoddy or incorrect advertising.
Now the wait for the inevitable arguments.......... ::)

The only complaint I have with eBay and Paypal are the fees.  They were reasonable once, now it feels like they are excessively high....

Could be just me though :-\

I use eBay to buy but not really to sell. On the buying front it does offer a lot. I've bought loads off there over the years and the only problems I have had is occasionally slow postage.

I've used eBay a lot. Even bought 3 cars blind on there :o All of which met my expectations. I was messed about a bit by someone who bought a car from me but that's the way it goes... You get muppets when you advertise on Autotrader as well ;)

The great thing about ebay, IMHO, is the slightly off-the-wall things that you simply would never be able to find without it.

Yes, it costs money, but how much have you saved by buying things there?

For those who complain, nobody is forced to use ebay, and there are free alternatives... Not nearly as good, though, funnily enough. ::)

Yes I've satisfactorily used eBay (in the vast majority of cases) for many years - it's convenient although not always the cheapest where similar items were available on the High Street.

Oops Mr Grumpy here, both cars I bought from Ebay had problems, the first supposedly with an MOT, had headlamps pointing at the sky, the new MIG did not sail thro an MOT 1st time as the seller said, and he didn't mention the advisories or oil leak. A recent USB DVD drive had the wrong cables, I sent it back, he said I took too long and refused to pay, plus he says I didn't send the cables back. And an HSS tap that doesn't look like HSS. And a Tosh T130 laptop that worked OK for a while but now the mouse has a mind of its own.

Having said all that, the vast majority of stuff I get is good, as described and well packed. Its only a few clowns who ruin it.

I find the fact you can't work out how much its going to cost you to sell something until its sold a pain and the fact that if someone buys something off you and doesn't complete the transaction you can't leave them negative feedback a pain as well

Its possible to work out what it will be assuming it reaches certain price points. Much like traditional auctions really ::)

The stopping sellers leaving negative feedback is the best thing ebay could have done - before then, buyers were held to randsom by less-than-honest sellers, which was ruining ebay - we all had it when a seller would wait for buyer's feedback before leaving any.  Admittedly, now, esp if selling cars etc on there, there is a mentality of crap buyers who bid and pull out. Generally less of a problem in mainstream ebay areas.

Crap buyers, yes, my car got punted up by some idiot who put it up £100 in the last hour. If you look at his previous bids they were all over the place, random stuff. Would he have completed ?. I doubt it, however he cost me at least £100.

Thing about a real face to face auction is you can always "reason" with the other bidder if he doesn't complete.
