Quick one - price of a thermostat?
« on: 29 November 2011, 14:13:53 »

Symptoms - takes a good 4 miles for the temp needle to move off the bottom, then sits around 85 degrees indicated. I'm thinking thermostat, unless there's a more obvious cause?

Is it worth or not worth getting a genuine one from the dealers, and if so how much will they be looking to relieve me of? Then a bottle of coolant on top...?

For a Genuine VX Thermostat with Housing think they are around £60 ish... Maybe an idea to get a Transfer Pipe too incase you break yours trying to separate them.

Is the thermostat a copper looking thing that screws in one end and something for a plug to plug in the other?? If so I have a brand new v6 genuine one here for very little...

That'd be the temperature sensor (either for the ECU or dash), not the thermostat :) (Based on the description, anyway)

Given how many failures we are seeing at the moment, fitting a second hand thermostat would be a very false economy, IMHO.

Give the agro to get to it and amount needed to strip down, agree with you there. Fit brand new  :y

Also there are two different types for V6, one with a thick flange one with thin

Good point, and they need different sealing rings and different length mounting bolts. :y

Just ordering the kit from AndyC is a good move, IMHO. He made sure I had the bits to cover all scenarios. It's a PITA to go searching for leaks afterwards, as I know thanks to the pattern water pump that I fitted at the same time. ::)

Ta all for the advice - bizarrely, today it's warmed up very quickly. Maybe it's the slightly milder weather assisting it, I'll keep an eye on it over the next few journeys, but my next free day off it'll be getting done :y

I've read the how-to a hundred times, it's not the first time I've dismantled a V6... but I'll still end up swearing on here no doubt.
