I also have a 2.2 estate and it is relatively simple to work on (especially the cambelt).  It has adequate poke for me, even driving long distances on French motorways and has lugged some very heavy equipment without complaint but I have never towed with it.

I have a 2.2, have never driven a 2.5 or other v6 Omega for that matter, but I have towed numerous vehicles with mine, and there is enough power for that.

I would say that unless there were known probs with your own one, I would not jump!  You would be opening a can of worms potentially!  Also it has over 50k miles more than yours, that is a lot!  If I were you, I would spend a couple of hundred tidying up your body work and retro fitting the CDX or even Elite goodies!

Also, mine is June 2001, and the tax is £260 don't know what yours is currently but something to consider.

If I were considering a 4 pot Omega, under no circumstances would it be an Auto.

Not enough grunt for an auto and I'd be doing it for fuel consumption and an auto box puts it back not far off where a V6 is, so no point.

Hi i tow my caravan with my 2.2 estate, the weight of my van is about 1,500 kg plus 2 bikes a roof box and 4 people in and a dog. It tows about 60-65  ok in 4th sometimes 5th on the motorway traffic permitting,  i get 20-23 mpg. and keep up with the speed limits on the a roads, that's if theirs no potholes.

I've owned (still have it) 2.2 manual for 7 years, its never put a foot wrong, very reliable cheap to run.

Don't expect performance though, it will keep up with most, just have to get them in braking!

Now own a 3.2, idle wise 2.2 is actually better! But 3.2 is just effortless power, does everything with ease. 2.2 struggles 80+ to make progess, 3.2 just watch the numbers just fly by. Not that i've done that of course 

I love my 2.2, hence its not been sold. I would not fart around with 2.5/2.6/3.0 personally, if your going to get V6 best to get biggest one!

I have had a Desmond for many years and have to say that it has been reliable, comfortable and relatively inexpensive to run - but not fast or particularly sprightly.

When I drive another car I have that has a 24 valve V6 engine it is obvious that the Desmond is quite underpowered for its size.

I'd say, the 2.2's are a great engine.. If they've had religious regular oil changes, else the cam chain oil jet blocks and the chain snaps, so as said, if yours is good, stick with that- you know what you've got then.

I know what 150 bhp feels like when you have diesel ascociated torque figures as well, it's good enough, but petrol power? Wouldn't have thought it'd be the best for towing...

re the tax, mine's a 2.5 v6 and has just been renewed for the year at £215. not much of a difference in the end.

I sold my Carlton 3.0L Diamond estate ( lotus kit and wheels fitted..it was the only one regd in Ireland ) a few months ago and bought a 2.2 Omega estate...for the mpg really...and I'm regretting it.....I play in a band and lug my gear in the estate and have found that 2.2 just isn't enough power...and when it's under pressure I don't seem to be getting anymore mpg than I was from the Carlton which just cruised when fully loaded....both were/are autos because my wife has a problem with her left leg and sometimes she would have to drive it.....she has an auto S Class 320 mercedes and she HATES driving the omega for the simple reason of the lack of power.....New Year I'm gonna buy 3.0 or 3.2

I have a 2.2 cd Auto and I like it. I tow 1350kg with no problem, although I find that if I run at the same speed as lorries, 56, it seems to hold top gear better than if I run at 60?? When I bought the mig I had a choice of 2.6 and this one, but chose the 2.2 because I thought the fuel consumption would be better, reading the posts on here it's not. Drove up to Lincoln yesterday through the road works on the A46 a lot of stopping, slowing down (40mph) stopping and it return just over 32 mph (solo) Aircon on auto.
 When towing it returns about 20mph. I like it, suppose at my age it has all the power I need
 Has as been said they are easy to work on.

Omega 2.2 is belt driven. But good advice on the oil changes, regardless.
