New checks will include inspecting a series of dashboard warning lights telling drivers if there is a problem with their airbags, tyre pressures, power steering and main headlight beam. Power steering will be subject to inspection with the MOT demanding a minimum level of fluid. Anti lock brakes and electronic stability control systems will also be checked.

The new checks will also ensure the new generation powerful headlights do not dazzle oncoming motorists.

I suppose from a safety point of view it makes sense. Tyre pressures seem a little harsh with the exception of punctures maybe. Just more for us to think about MOT time.

Problem is, gone are the days when the average driver could be relied upon to check levels and tyre pressures, so we all have to pay extra, just to ensure they are checked at least once a year.

Indeed... I know of several people who wouldn't do any form of check/maintenance on their vehicle between MOT's if I didn't do it for them

As I understand it .. tyre pressures themselves will NOT be checked ... but if you have an on-board pressure sensing system it MUST work .. correctly .... on with ignition then out when engine running, same will apply to ALL on-board self-testing systems.

For us that means the EML bulb must be fitted and working .....

Yep. I'd say that most of my mates, those who are petrol heads aside, view any effort or expense lavished on a car that hasn't actually stopped or failed an MOT to be a total waste of money.

So presumably  the cost of the test will increase from the maximum £54 (or around that)

Why do I smell a rat with this? I mean, yes, those sensors should be working but to test them is unfairly assuming the owner is reliant on them? Therefore treating them unfairly? Sounds like a cash-cow to me?!?

i know alot of it is commonsense but i personally know several people who have never looked under a bonnet and totally rely on the car to tell them if something is wrong which i think is becoming increasingly more common, so in this instance i think the new laws are spot on

Engine management light isn't included in the new items.

Borrowed a mate of mines ramps the other day to do an oil change. He's an MOT tester and has been for years - said from next year HIDs will be a fail too. Shame that. Will people just be swapping them out for normal bulbs before the test and refitting or leaving them in and hoping for the best?

My car is almost there, got the headlight washers. Self leveling and I'll be sorted. Although I begrudge spending money on something like that when the lights are perfectly aligned and don't dazzle anyone with them being in proper projector lenses too.

i have to agree vamps....

i was talking to my old man the other day who ws basically saying how everyone years ago was under the bonnet of their cars working but now ''you can't do anything cos its all computers''. thats clearly 'dangle berries' but its what people are made to believe.
