Couldn't get in my Coupe today
« on: 15 March 2008, 18:06:23 »

Wanted to change cars around today, because one's going tomorrow (yes yes yes).
Sometimes when you disconnect a Rover 800's battery the central locking can enable & lock the doors.
This happened the last time i moved her, but i had the other car parked within inches of the Coupe on the driver's side. The later Rover's don't have a key hole on the passenger side.
So i could just reach to unlock the drivers door & i could only open it about three inches & i'm not thin enough to get in :D
The only way i could do it was to sqeeze my arm in whilst holding a clothes line prop to unlock the passanger door, after many attempts & patients i unlocked the door.
But what should've been a few minute job turned out to be a good hour & half long.
She's all wrapped up again now for the winter with some car covers (Argos specials), which i'm very pleased with, because i expected there to be some condensation, but she was very dry.
Tomorrow i'll have my drive back & all to my self  :y :y :y :y

LOL, we had fun and games getting an 800 coupe started the other night.  Had popped one of its main fusible links ages ago, and abandoned in pub carpark....

It was given to a mate by the publicans - he's going to run it I think...

Is it the Vitesse or the Sterling? Either way their worth looking after as they only made 2000 of the Coupe in both specs.
They where made to order, so you ordered one with the spec you wanted & waited for them to make it for you.
They where originally made for the USA, but Rover pulled out of there before production.
I'm waffeling again  ;D ;D

Think it was Sterling, but don't quote me - whilst I like Rovers, I think the 800 is bloody awful....  ....it embodies everything cliche about Rover...

We all have oppinions, but having owned four & many SD1's prior I would disagree.
Though it wouldn't be for us all to be the same  :y

Exactly.  Always sort of fancied one.  Then when she lost her lease car entitlement, she had the little Rover, and I intended to have a car for winter, and use bike in summer, intention being not to keep a car more than 6months.  So I've had the MV6 4.5yrs ;D

Before getting the MV6, I though I'd have an 800 Sterling.  Every single one I test drove was rubbish.  Build quality appalling - popped dashes seemed common as well - and ineffective handling.

We both tried a couple of Omegas, and agreed that was the way to go.

Thats just my experience  :-/ - though I know a few people who used to put them together (600s and 800s built in Cowley), and the stories they tell are shocking...

Dash lift is common on MKI's, but rare on MKII's. The Vitesse is the best handling for obvious reasons & quick too. My Coupe's the rare of the pack being a Vitesse & so i hope she'll appreciate with time  ::) ::)

I never really liked the 800's but I loved the SD1's, I know by todays standards they are dire but it's the first car I had and it's because of that big V upfront and RWD combination having a lasting impression on me that I now find myself in a car with that magic combination again......

Gawd knows why I spent the 15 years or so inbetween in FWD's, I guess most of them were company cars though....

I once used a 827 something for a day. Two things most noticably stick in my mind about it.
100' turning circle! :-? (May be 150'  ;D )
The understeer when trying to nip in on a wet roundabout. The car just carried on forwards & totally ignored where the front wheels were pointing.  ::) ::)  ::)
