What a load of rubbish. A very close friend has just died. We where at school together and we did the same bricklaying apprenticeship, and allthough I gave up bricklaying he went on to do it all his life. He has died age 47, he is was 6 months older than me.

So much for people living longer these days, all manual workers should retire at 55.

I am bloody livid and shocked, this guy never did anyone any harm and would give you the shirt off his back.

That is exactly the point I have been making about raising the retirement age. We know a lot of people at knackers yard stage approaching old retirement age.

Might be alright for working in a C/H office but maintaing quarry equipemnt and so on....

The living longer thing is in my view a temporay thing. True people are NOW living longer and there is better medicine but the obesity issue and liver disease issue will soon put paid to that in forty years. Add in the stress from even worse congestion and travel to and from work and expected workloads........

Unfortunately it is a complete lottery - I lost a friend at 48 this year who looked after himself health wise etc, gym, diet and so on. My dad is nearly 91 and smokes 15 cigars a day - he has been retired 30 years and reckons that HSBC have a contract out on his life for costing them so much money (in reality it is a not a lot of course).

Luck of the draw - some want to work on - some do not - should do our best to give people a choice in view of diverse financial circumstances that you find yourself in.

There does seem to be an element of pot luck about these things.When I did physical work - up until three and a half years ago. I was as fit as a butchers dog,apart from a spazzy leg. Had to stop and now Im gaining weight and feel very unfit indeed.

speaking personally i have worked hard in the building trade in one way or another all my life at nearly 48 i feel the aches and pains now ok being a fat tinker dont help but even so body feels worn out at time. mates in the game seem to drop like flies as soon as they finally get to retire. so i do think there is some truth to how your working life effects your life span

i dont have any regrets after all you choose your own direction to a point

but we all deal with things differently a stressfull job can also be a real killer

A friend is taking the view that when you get to around 56 and should retire - on the basis that you have 10 good years to go out and do things followed by 10 not so good years and that is it....

His parents both died relatively young and this obviously has a bearing on his views.

life is so precious,so enjoy it while you can,you'll be amazed how many people tell me that as a paramedic who smokes "i should know better"...if i knew better i wouldnt drive a car,would live in a bungalow(stairs cause so may accidents) and would never consider crossing the road..in the past 2 weeks ive been to a 40yr old deceased,a 19yr old deceased and sadly a 6 month old baby...puts things in perspective...

still do long days now even local building stuff but no where near what i used too getting married sorted me out like coming home too wifey at the end of the day quality of life now break the money no one ever appreciates it when you work long hours anymore and as for a little drink at the end of the job your lucky if you get paid nowadays

I spend so much time dealing with people in various states of disrepair, I use it as inspiration to keep myself as fit as I can, purely to give me a fighting chance as I get older - but we all know of someone who's dropped dead despite their best efforts to stay healthy. Tis a lottery.
